SLS fluid bulk buy - Olympia Washington
I am looking at buying fluid for the self leveling system in my W123 300TD. Kendall Hyken Glacial Blu.
It is available locally at Small & Sons, but it comes in 5 gallon buckets. I'm looking for 1-2 people to share with. Meets recommended spec MIL-H-5606. Kendall Hyken Glacial Blu, including tax comes out to about $85.70 for 5 gal, so $17.00 a gal. 1/2 price of that overpriced FEBI stuff. I am near Olympia, so if you are between Tacoma and Centralia this might be worthwhile for you. http://site.industrial-oil.net/pdfs/Kendall-Hyken-Glacial-Blue-Spec-Sheet.pdf |

My fluid's prettier than your fluid!
OK. So no takers? I'm a little surprised. Olympia is HQ for greener greasecar Benzes. (besides maybe Eugene, OR.) Too bad there's not a regional forum.
I bought the 5 gals. Cheaper than two flushes of the Febi stuff, and at least as good. And a lovely shade of blu. So if you find this post and want some, give me an email through the forum. $5 a qt, $17 a gallon. Pick up in Tumwater. Last edited by Gscott; 06-28-2012 at 09:54 PM. |

When I needed some I went to National Aviation Supply and bought some Aeroshell Fluid 4. It's reddish and came in a nifty metal can with a winged clam shell logo on it. Prolly still not as pretty as your bloo stuff, though, and you'll always know which system is pissing out fluid now.

I was under the impression that the AW version of fluid is not compatible with the SLS... I use ISO-46 fluid, it's about 11.00/ 2-gallon jug at tractor supply...

Stevo, maybe this is the thread where you got your info?
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/236537-what-type-hydraulic-oil-goes-sls-system.html Looks like most of the oils are in the $20 a gallon range reading through a few threads on my search. Charlie

Not trying to start an oil war, we know how those work out.
I could not confirm the ISO 46 stuff is good enough, although it's reported to work fine. It does not meet the referenced spec; Mil-H-5606. Also it is 20wt where 15wt is specified for the MB system. Does it matter? I dunno, but I didn't want to go that way. People report using it and it's definately cheapest at about $10-$13 a gallon currently. The Shell Aero is 1/2 again more expensive from what I could figure (still cheaper than Febi stuff). I couldn't put my mitts on it quickly at the local aeropuerto, and I didn't need the aviation spec anyway. Much less the -100 degree F rating. The Glacial blu is only good to -60 F, but I think I'll risk it. Here's one of the links I read about this product. (mis-spelled as Glacial Blue) http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/36689-hydraulic-fluid-substitute-self-leveling-suspension.html?highlight=glacial+blue Member strelnik discusses the product at $8.50 a gallon in a 1 year old post. Hah! Now I got it 'cheap' at $17+ a gallon. So I would double check on pricing. An auto parts place in AZ has Febi for 10.50 a liter, the cheapest I found. (my local indy shop is higher). So $40 Imp. gallon (at cheapest) vs $17 for Kendall Glacial Blu US gallon. I wanted to be able to flush it out again in the future, so buying 5 gals was still cheaper than buying 2 gallons of the Febi stuff. Last edited by Gscott; 06-28-2012 at 10:44 PM. No, not an oil war yet, they are dusting off the pistolas and loading up.
![]() GSCOTT, that is good you posted the oil you came across, can`t have too many references as to what will work, and or brands/types. I have nothing to gain from this, but maybe a TD in the future. Charlie

I certainly don't want too thick a fluid in there! I have to replace a ram due to leakage anyway, so what better time? also have to change the accumulators in my Klaus

nevermind. All spoken for.
After further reading I'm keeping this fluid. The Kendall Hyken Glacial Blu is suitable replacement for Dexron III as well as PS fluid, so I'll have no trouble using it up. Actually I'll probably need more at some point, it is no more money that Dexron III anyway.
interesting reading at Revised Summary of Citroën Hydraulic Fluids and strelniks posts at http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/286321-whats-best-power-steering-fluid.html?highlight=kendall+hyken+glacial+blue http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/269716-1987-300td-self-leveling-suspension-fluid.html?highlight=kendall+hyken+glacial+blue http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/open-discussion/290880-hydraulic-fluid-question.html?highlight=glacial He either knows a bit about hydraulic fluids or he's baffled me with his BS. |
