Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel? Additives Required?

Just curious what the current thoughts are regarding adding anything to our fuel to improve lubrication of the pump, etc. Any real need to do this? Substitutes such as ATF in place of expensive over the counter additives? Any research behind why we might want to do this that is science based versus opinion? Do tell!

search on "lubricity study"

I run 1oz 2-stroke/gallon because it is necessary to lube the $1,000 VP44 injection pump in my 24V Cummins and may help the SD. Never any problems from the SD so additives may be unnecessary. Fuel used to be almost greasy. Not so any more.

As long as your Fuel Injection Pump gets clean Diesel Fuel it is going to out last your Engine.
Additives do more than just lube the Fuel Injection Pump so they have other good things to them.

It's hard to tell nowadays (in some areas, at least) who has good fuel and who has stuff that'll make your engine smoke. +1 with jay_bob, regardless of where I get mine, 4 oz of PS Diesel in the tank. Works like a charm. Sure, it can be up to $10/bottle, but I think it's worth it.

In both my SD and SDL...

(Just wanted to say that I use this primarily for Cetane boost, not lubrication...)

What will really save your VP44 is an aftermarket lift pump and a pressure guage so you know if the VP is starved for fuel. That's what kills them, along with "magic black boxes".

You don't need to buy any expensive additives to take care of this. Just keep a quart of cheap oil in the car and pour about 1/4 to 1/3 of a quart in the tank before every fill up. This will be more than adequate.

There is supposed to be enough lube in the diesel fuel, as required by federal standards. However the debate seems to be wether this is really enough. Pumps in my area now have at least 5% bio diesel in them, and this is really the best lube. I think I posted a link to the lubrictity study somewhere here. Search and see if you can find it, it came from another forum, just do not remember which one.

X2 One study I read came to the conclusion that just 3% biodiesel was the best lubricant.

I've used this for a few years. Slightly better fuel economy, and runs a bit smoother.

Probably just biofuel, hehe.

When I worked for the second largest parts chain in the US, I came across MANY product samples. I have many gallons of this stuff...
