Injection Line Pulsing Difference.

Hi Everyone,
I’ve some seriously irritating starting problems with my OM603 n/a.
90 k original miles.
It takes a really long time to start, sometimes it simply flattens the battery.
All my other diesels start first turn.
The glow plug light goes out after about five seconds.
The pipes to the injector pulse really strongly on one, two and three (from the front of the engine), lines four and six are faint by comparison.
Is this a clue?
Any advice gratefully received!

Cheers,

Paul

Check Your Glow Plugs with a Volt/Ohm Meter (Multimeter) just to be sure.

Also if you keep the Key in the Preglow Position and ignore the Glow Plug light your Glow Plugs will stay on for about 30 seconds at wich point the Relay will time out and shutoff.

You could have plugged Filter, clogged Fuel Tank Screen, an Air Leak on the suction side of your Fuel Lines or your Fuel Supply Pump is on the way out.

Is the top of your Fuel Injection Pump wet with Fuel. If so the O-rings need to be changed.

Thanks very much for those tips!

I don't quite understand the glow-plug advice. I didn't know there was a pre- position. The plug light goes off after around five seconds.
I hear a buzzing from what seems to be the glove box - left side on this car.
Could that be significant?
Cheers,
Paul

Definate suspect glow-plugs or glow-plug timer/supplies to it/them.

As to Injector line pulse, suspect your clips/mounts are weak/worn/broken/missing.
--They are Plastic on that motor....

The lines should not be felt to pulse/throb much if at all, if they do--it indicates they are loose on the anti-vibration mounts....

The pre-glow position is the position you turn the key to to start the Glow Plugs; that is what the Manual Calls it.

Checking the Glow Plugs addresses the No Start Issue.

I don't know about the buzzing. However, the left side is the side the Glow Plug Relay. Someone is just going to have to listen more closely to determing where the sound is coming from

Hi,

Many thanks for the advice. I'll get under the bonnet at first light.

Should the relay 'buzz/hum'?

Cheers,

Paul

No!

Sounds like a poor earth/supply or faulty timer. It should click with turn-on of Ign. and remain quiet until it clicks turning the glows off.

--How long this time is depends on engine temp, but could be up to 2 mins.

Ahhh,
This could be answer!
Too busy to do anything more than start the car - eventually - today.
The light went out after about five seconds, the noise continued, and after about twenty seconds lifted in pitch.

Thanks everyone for all the advice!

Cheers,

Paul

Just had time to have a listen in a quieter environment and I noticed that there is a click after about twenty five seconds, and then the note changes.

It just continues to hum, I got fed up and tried to start it and it finally obliged after about twenty turns. A great cloud of black smoke!!

Sorry to be a bit thick, but could anyone tell me where the relay is located?

Thanks.

Cheers,

Paul

I am not sure on your Engine but if you wanted to you could trace the Glow Plug Wires back to the Relay.
The Relay ought to be on the side that the Glow Plugs are on.

On 123s it is on the Passanger Side (Left Front Fender Well).
