OM602 Turbo Longevity/Typical Problems

Hello everyone,

I'm possibly considering purchasing a turbo'd OM602 powered car. I'm not all that familiar with the OM60x family of engines. I've read that the 602 in particular (at least according to Wikipedia) is heralded up there with the 617 in terms of longevity.

I was hoping someone with more real world experience could comment on what one would expect to see in terms of part replacement intervals.

For example, I know that on M116/7 cars the timing chain needs to be replaced every 100-125k or so. That around 200-250k that the heads might needs some reconditioning..

Anyone with similar knowledge/comments about the 602?

Run synthetic oil and don't worry about the timing chain guides till after 250K miles.
Get the car if it is in good shape and the price is right. You will love it.

Most 60x car would have upwards of 250K by NOW, may or may not be running synthetic oil from new. So the answer conveys nothing of substance.

MBZ turbo is quite solid. Never have any problems with my turbos but every car is different so it is always a 'crap shoot' with an used car. My N/A 602 5-sp is serving me well and a fun little car.
