Oh for all the oil that's leaked out

I've still been poking around here before I stick my neck out and post some pictures. Decided to break the seal.

Here is one from underneath, right behind what I think is the harmonic damper [wc?].

No, I have not yet cleaned this part of the engine but hope to soon.

Does this look characteristic of any particular leak? I replaced the valve cover gasket and that helped a bit, but have since discovered the heat shields on the injectors, and perhaps one of these other items suggested by Roy:

* A pre chamber leak..
* An injector seal leak..
* A damaged injector body...
* A damaged cylinder head.

Thanks!

YUUK!
best to just bite the bullet and soak that with degreaser, and wash it all off, then start the car, and find the leak.

WOW that's a slimey mess. My bet is on the valve cover. they are TRICKY to put on right.

it could be absolutely anything.

+1 on that. I thought the same thing. We'll see if it's vacuum pump gasket when I swap the pump next week. I just hope it's not anything major...duh!

You'll have to clean it up, then you should be better able to determine where your leak(s) is(are).

The front crank seal is a possibility also, as is a weeping oil cooler line slinging oil about.

Sounds pretty major if that's the case.

My indie did an R&R for front crank seal in about 20 minutes. Watched him do it ON A HOIST which is the only way to go about this job for access. No rad pull, lock the flywheel (tool), get a ***** of a bar on the front nut, yank off she comes... pull the front hub new seal, reverse it's all back together. Wow.

No way I'd try that at home (without a hoist).

A friend did this in situ without even removing the radiator, on a 240 D.

The attachments are from the FSM.

On page two of the first one, there is a special tool pictured, just behind that is a part that can be removed, see the allen bolts, there are one on each side facing up too, once off, the spacing ring can be accessed.

I have not checked in on this thread, but over the last month I used several cans of gunk spray and a hose-end nozzle and got a lot of the crud off of there. Looks like 79Mercy was correct: vacuum pump gasket.

So far, no more leaks. But I will keep checking under there regularly for any other leaks.

Thanks y'all.

Well, looks like you were right as well. I think the crank seal is leaking. The vacuum pump seal is not leaking any more yay! But there is still oil leaking and it's from between the 'balancer' and the block...somewhere.

I just acquired a donor car to transfer the powertrain over so I'll have an opportunity when the motor is out/more accessible to fix this type of thing.
