OM603 updated vacuum pump
My new vp arrived today from fast lane.
I was hoping for a Pierburg but instead I recorded a Febi/Bilstein pump. It's the updated style and a Pierburg copy. I'll install it Saturday. Just need to know when the engine is at TDC so I can remove the pump without the spring under tension. And then how do I add oil to it so it doesn't start dry. |

Febi might be made in China!

If you don't get the answer you need, remove the old pump by loosening each bolt one turn at a time. Just make sure you don't miss any. With the old pump off you will be able to eyeball the cam and rotate the engine by hand to align the cam for easy alignment of the new pump.
As far as oiling the new pump, you can wet the interior with a squirt can before installation or you could try squirting oil in the vacuum ports before attaching the vacuum lines. Jeremy

I have installed VP on the 190D ( same pump as yours ) and the 300D. I never bothered with the cam or TDC, or oiling it. I just installed the pump evenly by tightening each screw gradually. Never gave me any problem.
If you are concern, may be you just turn the engine until you find a position where the spring on the pump is least compressed as it goes in. Good luck.

I never worried about cam position. just be slow, and even. if, as you remove the pump bolts, it's under pressure, feel free to turn the motor clockwise, until it's not.

I kind of wish I had asked before ordering from fastlane if the pump would be a pierburg since I called Phil to order it. Online it shows Pierburg as the only option. I emailed Phil about it and hopefully he can help me out. I feel like I can't be in the om603 vacuum pump swap club now.

I looked on a competitors website and their price for a pierburg vp is now less than 300. Really!

I emailed Phil about it and he is getting to the bottom of it. He says he has always sent out Pierburg pumps. This has to be an issue on the warehouse/vendor end of things.
