Tach on 300TD

The tachometer is intermittant on my 83 300TD I think it is a loose electrical connection to the sensor. Is the pickup for the tach located at the rear of the transmission ? I found a single wire connection with a rubber boot over it located at the back of the transmission on the driver side. Since the tach works sometimes and then suddenly drops to 0 and then will suddenly start to work agin Im pretty sure its a loose connection. Also when I had the Transmission fluid changed the mechanic said he fixed my tach for me. It stayed functional for about a month. Thanks in advance for any information......Russ Hummel

If you do a search on the subject, you'll probably find the answers to your questions.

Your tachometer problems are most likely the relay. It is located on the drivers side fender wall towards the front. It is a black, cylindrical component about 2" tall. If you search this site you will find out about the cigarette butt trick or you can just replace the relay. I did the cigarette trick and it cured the problem but I am told it only works temporarily.

Yeah, the old cigarette butt trick. Worked for me for a while, but for now I just do without my tach. I'd bet your problem is the relay and you can probably buy a new one from PartsShop.
