1995 300D rattling noise from engine

I'm going to help out a friend tomorrow by looking for a rattling sound coming from her cars engine compartment. She took it to a shop, and they said that the motor mounts are on the way out, but that the sound isn't anything to worry about and that she has plenty of time to wait until she replaces the mounts. This wasn't an MB specific shop, but they service German cars.

I did a search and came up with vibration damper and belt tensioner as possible culprits. Can you guys think of anything that might start rattling once the mounts start to soften up? Thanks

If the rattle is coming from the front of the engine, there is a good chance that the tensioner shock could be the culprit. If the rubber shock bushings are shot, it makes all kinds of metal on metal rattling sounds. Good luck!

x2 on the shock or spring bushings. Could also be the tensioner pivot bearings. When they fail, the serp belt edge tends to run over the edge of the tensioner pulley. I would also guess a failing vacuum pump if the mileage is 200k+

mounts

when your motor mounts begin to fail or fail, you do not have plenty of time to replace them. The least of your problems will be the cooling fan hitting the cowling.

I would strongly suggest you complete the last sentence.

Its really quite a scene what happens after the fan hits the cowling
