Wheel bearing don't fit? 300D
Well I'm in the process of doing brakes and bearings on the front of my 84 300D. I got parts from O'Reilly auto parts. ( I hope that wasn't a mistake). Everything going well installed new rotors, cleaned everything well. packed the inner bearings and put in the seals. The problem is that they won't go all the way onto the spindle. Tried to force them a little and had to jerk them off. These are National brand bearings. My question is how tight are these supposed to be on the spindle? Has anyone had new bearings that didn't fit like this. I guess I should have tried to fit the bearing on the spindle before I installed them in the hub. Now I have to clean all the grease out and start over. The outer bearing seems to slide on without any effort.
Now this delays my project, How can I be sure now that they're giving me the right bearings? |

My driver's side front wheel bearings had a similar issue. The only reason that I didn't panic was that I had already finished the passenger side and I had a matched set of bearings. So I had to pursuade them a little; the rotor/hub finally popped on. The pursuasion was performed by a rubber mallet. They seem to be very particular to the alignment when you push them on.

After reading your post I went back and check the fit again. Sure enough with a little patience I found that it does fit, although like you say it seems to be particular to alignment. I think I need new seals now though because I took them out. So I think that I can get some seals and finish the job OK.
Thanks for your input! |

Also, too much grease makes it difficult to install them

Too much grease, I've heard to use 50 grams of grease, but I don't have a scale. I always seem to worry that I don't have enough grease. I packed the bearing and put it in and added grease all around before I put the seal in. Maybe I did put too much.

I also experienced that problem on my 300D. I chucked the bearing in a lathe and polished the inside bore. It fit properly after that exercise.
Excess grease will not stop the hub from going on, but it will prevent you from installing the hub cap. |

Use emory cloth on the spindle.
