240Ds in amazing condition: How much do you expect them to go for?

Mercedes-Benz : 200-Series W123 in Mercedes-Benz | eBay Motors
Mercedes-Benz : 200-Series W115 in Mercedes-Benz | eBay Motors

That first one didn't meet the reserve price last time it was listed but got up to $24,009. That guy seems to have quite a collection.

Those are beautiful cars, no doubt. They are in mint condition. I like to drive my cars and would be concerned about using one of those as a daily driver. They are show cars. It is hard to tell what someone will pay. If you have the money and you just have to have it, you might shell out what he is hoping to get. A smarter buyer who is a collector / investor would be expecting that he could sell it in the future for more than he paid for it. I am not confident that the W123 and W115 series are in this class. They are not coveted like the older sports cars. If I was investing in cars, I would be more interested in an older SL model.

What RML said...

They're in pristine condition, yes, but remember that these cars were built as commuter, run-em everyday cars. To a diehard collector of Mercedes sedans and such, maybe. To an average Benz collector, probably not.

I’ve been to this shop a couple times. He will get the asking price...rest assured. I believe he sold a wagon recently for around 30K. A lot of the time it isn’t a US buyer that purchases the car. I’m confident that 240D will go for between 30-35K.

Wow! Also, notice the two wagons behind the 115.

If I had the cash I would pay that for the W123. I'm also slightly insane when it comes to these cars

Unfortunately, they don't list the prices of their vehicles once sold, but just for the photos, you should head to their website:

Amazing.

There is at least one other thread here on this guy. I have seen the documentary and read some other material elsewhere and you have to bear in mind he has a niche market so narrow only a virtual one-man operation could make a living off serving it, even at those prices.

I cannot even imagine how much time he puts into these cars, and he claims he travels in person to get them and drive them back to his shop (tho I wonder if that was the case with the 240d, with that low mileage). If you bear in mind that his level of detail and prep is equal to high-end restorers, then his prices start to look pretty reasonable relative to what your'e getting. Also if memory serves he provides a warranty on the cars.

If I had the money I would buy one of his cars, perhaps not those but I have seen others that are equally pristine but with more 'normal' odometer readings, say in the 80-100k range, that are priced in the teens.

Or yes you could spend your life on Craigs and eBay classifieds and hope to score one of the cars he finds, some day, somewhere, for his source price. But only the most committed (or commit-able) of us would then put the time into going through the car from end to end to bring it to his standard.

Yeah, cars like this 240D are to me classed differently than "amazing condition" as the title of the thread mentions. This is by many measures, still a new car. No mileage to speak of, 100% original perfect paint/interior...etc. The amazing part for me is that it exists. If I had it to throw away, it would be thrown at this car. Outstanding find.

Slightly insane? You know. It is the same as being slightly pregnant.

Both of them are very beautiful cars. I could see the 76 going at about $8500.00, but if he didn't sell that blue one for $24,000.00, I think he misses a good sale. It is nice, but it is still a 240D (and with an automatic besides).

Anyone know what the name and paint code of that 76 w115 is?

That is too cool, but the price is staggering. Over $47,000. It reminds me of a 190E EVO II that was for up for auction and only had 212 miles on it. All I remember is that it didn't sell.
