Thumbs up

Well are we talking about a Nailhead Buick? An IH 6.9? BMW M106?

Please provide more information.

I have an extra cylinder head from OM617.952 engine. It was hot tanked and the machine shop says it does not need to be resurfaced. $100 plus shipping. Shipping is $104.50. PM if interested.

If it is something with an Iron Head I would say the the most common cause of cracked Heads is overheating.
On Trucks pulling an excessive load in the wrong Gear (lugging) over time can create localize stress that can crack Iron Cylinder Heads (more typical with Detroit Diesels). Lugging causes the Cylinder Pressure to shoot up.

If it is an Aluminum Head they crack due to design issues and warp and crack more easily due to overheating than the Iron Heads do.
On My Volvo Diesel with an Aluminum head certain sized cracks between adjacent the Valve Seats are allowable.
And, my Head has such cracks and I have been driving it like that since about 1992 with no issues.
You cannot jet on down to the Junkyard and get a Diesel Volvo Head. You can with a 617.

If the OP bothered to read the forum rules before posting, you wouldn't need to write a dialog attempting to provide answers for every possible M/B diesel engine ever made.

He has a 617 in a Hilux.
Even I was able to work that out!
I do agree it would be useful if members could put some info in their signature.
Not a sack-able offense though.

Putting one's car year/model in our signature ought to be made a requisite for sign up to the site. It's why (MB's in general our own in particular) we're all here in the first place one would think.

I have to wonder about doing any further work to an engine with a head in that condition. When you find a good head, take the rest of the engine with it.

You guys are right. Sorry I should have stated what model. It is a 617.952. The motor came out of a 300d that drove well but had grease run through it for a few years. I got the car running and thought it was a good donor for my toyota 4x4 swap. Only thing I notice after reading some other posts is it had oil in 4 of the 5 cylinders. I thought the injectors were leaking and causing the carbon to liquefy but I was wrong. Im guessing it was from these cracks around the prechamber hole.
The motor is still on the engine stand and I do need to get a head. I may go to the junk yard. But I may take up Greazzers offer.

Anyway. I appologize. I thought most of you guys have a 617. Don't see many other Mercedes diesel's in socal

As long as you're that far into it, pull the pistons and see what the grease has done to the rings.

So there is no parts mix ups there is also 617s that are not made for a Turbocharger. While the Exterior looks similar the innards and the strength of the Turobed model is different.
Look on the side of the Block that the Fuel Injection Pump goes at about the Middle top of the Block you will find the Engine Number. Post that here if yo will be getting some Parts from Our Members.

I live in Long Beach, CA and there is quite a few of the Mercedes Diesels from the 1980's in my immediate neighborhood; a lot of Gassers to.
Over 1/2 of the population in my area of Long Beach is Asian (that includes my Wife who is a Naturalized Citizen). They are mostly the ones driving Mercedes.
