questions about 300 CD

Fellow listers,

I've been lurking for quite awhile, but have greatly appreciated the tech help you have provided.

Our 300D is humming thanks to your input!

Now-- I have a line on an '83 300CD turbo. 126,000 miles, brakes, steering and acceleration are excellent, interior has need for cosmetic work (dirty carpets, holes in leather seats, also a bit faded). Climate ctrl and sunroof work.

Has original paint, only 1 ding (dime sized), clearcoat failing in one area near cowl, otherwise just needs a good cleaning and wax job.

No rust, 5 alloy rims.

Is mid-3000's a good price?

Also does anyone have production qtys on this model?

Finally- a mechanic near where I work taught me a trick to gauge blowby in a turbo engine. With the engine idling, pull the crankcase vent tube off the air cleaner, plug it and start counting 1001, 1002,1003----- until the accumulated blowby overcomes the vacuum pot in the IP and pulls the rack closed, and stops the engine.

The tech told me a new engine takes 14-15 seconds to die, this one took 9.

Any opinions on the accuracy of this test?

TIA.

Mileage seems pretty low, but it sounds as if you may be able to talk the owner down because of the ugly interior. Have you checked the cruise control? I don't know what the value of the CD is compared to the 300D or 300TD, but I think that price sounds good for a 300D in EXCELLENT condition. You can check Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com), but they're not the final authority - you are. Are you willing to pay 3K? Have the car checked out thoroughly by a good independent tech and deduct the estimated repairs from what the blue book value shows. Those CDs are good looking cars! Almost as nice as the wagon.
