Sorry for bringing up an old tread, but how did this turn out?

So mouch interresting info in here, and then suddenly, it stopped?

I live in Norway, and own an 1992 300 TD Turbo (om603.960) . Glad to help if anyone need help with euro-spec parts.

I have had the car for 13 years, and have tons of plans for it. I have two more engines sitting in the yard, and planning of having one of the IPs rebuild with Tomniks magic.

As for the 3,5, it does have 310 nm torque at 2000 rpm, were as the 3.0 have 273 at 2400 rpm (pre 1989 euro spec only have 265 nm at 2400).

The 3.5 have some more torque, and at even lover RPM's. I'm thinking, that can't come out or thin air only.

The torque is in the longer stroke / larger bore, in the increased low-RPM fueling, in the faster spool-up of the .55 trim turbo. However, the 3.5L engine does not develop more HP, due to the lower RPM limit, with less RPM range and the same number of gears it is less suitable for automotive use and loses some performance vs the 3.0.

Personally I prefer running the 3.0, it has been a very strong engine and can easily be tuned to exceed the 3.5L performance, the torque can be increased significantly with a better turbo and better low-rpm fueling.

I too would prefer the 3.0 pump, with modifications. You can go up to 8,5 mm elements now, and get diesel for whatever you want.

There were questions about the 3.5 pump earlier in the tread. As the 3.5 deliver more torque at low RPM's, I'd think it is set up different, delivering more diesel.

As a counterpoint, my '93 SD with the wastegate stuck open pulled harder from a stop than any 603.96 I've driven so my guess is a 3.0 needs a lot of fuel mods to make up for stroke and displacement. A 3.0 might be the better choice for an open track but I'll take a 3.5 on a tight autocross course. The realities of a 3.5 probably nip that decision early in the process

I'll sell you one of each (not including the one in the car) with the car, you decide which one to use.

My '93 SD charged well off the line with the wastegate closed, but not like my '87. I attribute that to the extra 1000lbs. With the wastegate open, I think a strong 240D will give it a good run.

Interesting that the little 651 has more HP and torque than either, from 2.1L
