'new to me' 87 300TD

hello all. i admit i dont post much in this section. i know my way around the 61x series engines/cars.

picked up a 87 300TD.. obviously the OM603 6banger. total new bird to me.

Its been sitting for 2 years and so far im only looking at a non operational tachometer and a cracked fuel heater (air in fuel). also a broken sway bar bracket.

so ive been thinking of keeping this pickup truck as a daily driver. working SLS with what looks like newer shocks.

did a oil, fuel and air filter change so far. thats it. tank was building vacuum. vent check ball seems OK..

SOOOOO... im looking for a list of things to check on these 60x cars

Nice. You and I both are going to be doing the same. I just picked one up through an abandoned auto auction. Is yours the one recently listed on CL for $2,995?

pull the vent hose off the line on the bottom of the tank. see if you can blow through it.

oh, you've got a flat rear tire, and your front wheel is dirty.

IIRC they weren't asking a lot for it so I'm sure you got a deal.

You can bypass the fuel thermostat in Santa Rosa. Go directly from the small fuel filter to the lift pump as in a 61x. The fuel thermostat likely just needs a new o-ring but there's a rebuild kit that includes the plastic parts.

Try this to start - http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/articles/124.1x3_buying_tips.txt

Oh, there's a white spot on the hood and the driver side headlight wiper is hanging loose.

I work in Santa Rosa every weekday... Is there any kind of car club/meet up for these cars?

aahhh you saw it too huh? it even went for a week and was reposted! her discription of it was horrible. she said it had water damage and blah blah blah!

one door seal is bad. carpet was dirty. yes it needs alot of little things but it runs great.

WTF is the deal with this fuel heater? yeah i bypassed it. also dropped the pickup strainer and blew all the lines out. had alot of water in it.

so it had a injector knock at idle. just loud clacking. i use diesel power service like DIESEL PURGE because its easier to get in stores. anyways while running that the engine is super quiet. as soon as i switch back to dino diesel it starts clacking again...

im pretty sure the ALDA is shot. sometimes it has power. and i think the ALDA is messing with the trans shifts.. sometimes it shifts smooth under light load and sometimes it shifts hard. no slipping thank jebus!

changed oil with mobil delvac. previous "mechanic" left the OLD oil filter housing cap seal inside the housing.. lovely! motor mounts are in great shape!

tires were dry cracked. picked up a set of 75% michelin X RADIALs for $80... no shakes up to 85mph for not balancing yet (i have a tire machine at home)

BTW took her up to 100mph last night.. smooth! with a power washer in the back LOVE THE SLS.

thinking about cutting the cat out.. i dont want it louder i just want better flow.

thank you for that link. my email did not notify me about replies to this thread so this is the first time ive checked up on it.

alot of rattling from the hatch area. i already know the third brake light cover is shot.

i need 1 drivers side front sway bar bracket. other then that all the suspension looks good.

with 260k on the original 14 head i dont think this engine is blowing up anytime soon.. i have the feeling if it was, it would of happened a long time ago.

there's a DIY on here on how to replace it fairly easily... I'll see if I can find it, because 3 of my 4 87's are leaking there too...

the 190 trans will fit in, but it's not very sturdy so be gentle with it. best to find one from a 280CE or so... although not as easy to find...

What did you do to get rid of the catalyst? I have a suspicion that mine is also clogged up.
