You love IP threads...You love IP threads...

SO after a long wait I have a fit of time to mess with my 300td this weekend. I am going to attempt to install my IP.

IP is set from removal, Engine is at 24BTDC, how do I tell visually that #1 is at the beginning of the compression stroke?

I did not take the oil lines or housing off, what are my chances of reinstallation without doing so? I know I CANNOT get the IP in with the bracket on the IP or Engine, I have tried...but has anyone tried to pull it through from under the car?

Thanks and I hope I am days away from cruising down the road in this beauty before my current DD dies again and I have to put more money into a Mini van that is not worth the repair!

Thanks so much always for the advice and wisdom!

Would the compression stroke be when I see the piston going up and I have both lobes pointing down at 24BTDC?

Take your oil fill cap off and look for the lobes(both) to be up, and the crank on 24 degrees.

Lobe being the fat end or the skinny end, I have seen them pointing down( the skinny parts) but not up.

And couldn't the lobes be pointing up as well in the power stroke?

"Fat" and "skinny" are definitely subject to misinterpretation. The lobe is the part that "points."

Yes, but you cannot be in the power stroke at 24* BTDC. At that crankshaft position, you are either on the exhaust stroke or the compression stroke.

That would be the exhaust stroke.

So I need see the lobes pointing Upish or bolh lined up at 12oclock? I am on 24BTDC right now ant they are pointing around 10 and 2, but I have no idea which way the piston is headed, I have not taken an injector off to see.

I have stopped at 24BTDC 3 times and gotten both down, 7/3 o'clock, and 10/2 o'clock.

Thanks so much for the help!

If you are BEFORE TDC, the piston cannot be headed anywhere but up. (Similar concept to the bear who can run only halfway into the woods.)

10/2 o'clock is more or less what you want to see.

Ok, I will go with that then. Will slap the IP on there tomorrow, and pray I have a New car when I figure out where all the pieces go that I took off.
