You have reached the tipping point where the car becomes worth more to you than anyone else -- as a complete driving car. To put it another way, the value of new parts or repairs can't be recouped in the selling price. (Come see my $5500 1980 TD, which might be worth $2500 on a good day around here.)

If no one is biting on the car as it is, I would at least pull the WVO system as I know what it costs to build a proper one. I feel for you there.

The problem with that damage isn't just the dent, it's that it isn't really possible to repair it to look decent without repainting the entire car.

Unless someone wants to just drive with a parts-black, or primer-bondo, or odd-coloured used fender on it. Unless someone lucks out and finds a rattle-can grey that matches (wouldn't even need to sand it out).

Generally speaking cars with body damage are like cars with a bum trans -- they go for well less than the value of the car minus the repair cost. (I bought two of mine for cheap precisely because... body dents don't scare me but apparently they do most folks.)

I can't really comment on the prices as I'm not even remotely local but I'm sure that in principle, so long as you have the time, parting it out will eventually get you more money.

Parting it out will probably cause you more hassle though - back and forwards to the post office - dealing with paypal / ebay (eek!). All compared with a few weeks of tyre kickers and stupid questions and a low price...

to the RIGHT buyer it's worth 2500.00... the problem is, the right buyer isn't looking for a dented car. or a car with rust... unless they have their baby with a blown motor/drive train... and they want to VERIFY the used motor is great before they sink $$ into a used motor.

near me with little rust there are three 300D's under 700.00 for sale... and an SD in the 1200 range...
I bet it's the same in most areas... that lowers the value of your car.

I've got a 240D in my yard that the owner paid over 7K in the last two years... for with parts and purchase price... and it's worth about 500.00 with the damaged suspension...

Maybe I should parts it out?

cmbdiesel, I still have it. Why do you ask?

I bought 2 good used front fenders for it, rattle can sprayed it to match the color. Still have to install them. The engine runs so nice that I feel it will go another 300K. It's a reliable driver and is off the road as a car that is ready to go into service should the need arise.

I'll probably try to sell it locally in a few weeks. Not for $600 though.

As my SD continues it's slow but inevitable march back to the dirt, I am starting to kick some tires...

Figured you are in my general geographical area, so what you have is likely going to be comparable to what I will find price-wise.
Dare to say that yours is probably considerably better maintained and cared for though.

Will probably be later in the summer before I will feel comfortable pulling the trigger on something though, still trying to get some $$ back into savings after dumping pretty much everything on another house.
But the house has an oil burner!!

SOLD!

Sad to see her go. Went to a good home. A forum member took the train down and drove iit 150 miles home. Per new owner, the trip was "flawless". The engine will hopefully live in a new rust free body.
