OM602 IP Timing

I would be grateful if someone could supply details of how to check / set the injection pump timing on a OM-602. (602.962 to be exact).

All of the 60X series engines utilize an electronic device "A-B lights" to set IP timing. It's a 15 minute deal once you have and use the tool. However, obtaining it is a bit difficult.

Wow that's disappointing, looks like my options are:

1) find independent w/tool

2) visit the dealer

3) is there one?

3) Rent the tool from MBDoc. It's only $25. but he does get a hefty deposit for it. You can easily damage it (it's just a plastic box with a probe) if you're not careful.

The tool is a $300. item............

See post 4 in the below Thread:

The Timing/Locking Pin is sold by Fastlane,on eBay and I believe there is a few in the Tool Rental Program. You could also check the Tool Rental for the AB Light.

Great info, thanks!

So you would use this tool to ensure the lobe of the pump is in the proper position (by checking for maximum height on the exposed shaft), correct?

I was able to find two different vendors offering the tool on ebay, neither were Fastlane.

Have crank in the right position, install a locked pump. Do not think the light is worth the effort.

The Timing/locking Pin goes into the Hole in the pic and locks onto the Blade/Tab in the pic.

You set the degrees on the Crank Damper/Pointer ATDC and install the Timing Pin.
Loosen what is needed to rotate the Fuel Injection Pump and rotate the pump carefully until the Tool Locks the Pump.
If the Pump has never been off of the Engine the timing is likely retarded/late. Rotating the top of the Fuel Injection Pump towards the Engine Block should do it. It also should not take much movement.
You need to find the specific spec for your Engine as most time at 15 Degrees ATDC But there are some that have 14 or 14.5 Degrees ATDC.

The A&B Light uses the same hole and Blade/Tab.

Using the A-B light is less effort and it's more tolerant of tired eyes.

If the pump has never been off the engine there's a chance the 21 year old o-ring between the IP and block won't like being nudged when you adjust IP timing.

Check chain elongation before changing IP timing.

IIRC there's a third method in the FSM that uses a fancier factory tool to check IP timing with the engine running. I doubt you could rent it for $25 or even $300.

The Pin sticking out on the Timing Locking Tool only tellys you it is locked also there is a groove that need to be positioned properly on the Inside. Therr is a smaller groove on the outside to tell you if it is positioned properly.

It only locks in one place.

Can someone please explain to me this process like I'm five years old?
This is what I have gathered so far:
1. Adjust crank to 15 degrees ATDC
2. Install locking pin into side of injection pump
3. Rotate bolts on the back of the injection pump until it locks
Do I have this correct? Sorry, I am a bit of a noob!

I'm not sure what 3 means.

I would suggest removing the plug for the indicating device, rotating the engine till the "ridge" is centered and insert the tool. Easily try turning engine to insure it is locked in. Now see where the timing is set.

If it is off you will then need to loosen the fasteners holding the injection pump, remove the tool, turn the engine to the correct setting in regards to top dead center then rotate the ip around until you can get the tool realigned/installed.

If the engine runs decently, reference IP timing should be close to 15*ATDC.

1. Set crank pulley to 10* ATDC
2. Remove RIV port cover and look for the RIV tang
3. Slowly turn the crank until the RIV tang is centered or just above center. It might take a full turn of the crank.
4. Install the IP lock and see if the tang engages in the slot
5. If not, turn the crank even more slowly until the tang engages
6. Check the timing mark in the crank pulley
7. Determine whether it’s worth getting it closer to spec
8. If so, remove the IP lock
9. Turn the crank to 15* ATDC. Two full turns if reference timing is beyond 15*.
10. Loosen the 3 IP bolts around the vacuum pump and the bracket in the back end of the IP. 603s have the aft bracket. I don’t remember if 602s do.
11. Use the turnbuckle near the #1 delivery valve to move IP so the RIV tang is centered in the RIV port. If there’s a long way to go, you might remove the injector lines so it’s less of a battle.
12. Use the IP lock to confirm that the tang is centered.
13. Tighten the IP bolts
14. Remove the lock

Done. Attach and bleed the injector lines if they were removed.

This is for an OM 606 but the concepts are exactly the same for a 602/603.
