76 240d ip vacuum test
the 240d has been a little down on performance lately so i figured it was time for a valve adjustment which helped but while i was working away i noticed that the vacuum line that goes from the ip to the intake has oil in it. this car has always had a bit of a smoking problem (not real bad but there) and it uses about 1qt of oil every 1000 miles but this is the first time i have seen oil in that line. anyway i disconnected the vacuum line, put the start/stop cable in the stop position, put my thumb over the open hole on the ip and then had my wife pull the cable to the run position. when i took my thumb away... zilch! i tried it 3 times and still no pop or suction. i just want to make sure i am doing this right before i try to fix the diaphragm. if i can even get the parts.

I had the same symptoms before i changed my diaphragm. and it fixed it. but another member told me that the poppet cam can leak and to pour oil on it when the engines running and if you hear the rpm change then that means its leaking.

If there is oil in the vacuum tube, it is almost certainly a leaking diaphragm. The idle is high and the engine is smoking during driving.
Follow the procedure in the FSM for replacing the diaphragm. |

now that you mention it the idle does seem a bit fast.
