Broken piece behind Modulator Valve on transmission

Okay - I removed the modulator valve on the transmission of my 87 300D. I notice the piece that the modulator valve goes into was broken. The part is plastic and is shaped like a cup with stem and the stem is broken. My question is can I drive it this way until I find the replacement part? I guess my question is what does this do? Is there pressure pushing on the stem, to where it really doesn't hurt, or does the modulator valve pull up on the stem depending on the vacuum supplied?

On the 617.952s the Plastic Modulator Pin is around $8.
So it might pay you to call the Dealer and see if one is in stock and get the Job overwith.

The Valve controls the Modulating Pressure.

A 617.952 is an engine. And you won't find one in an '87 300D.

You will need to replace the plastic pin, for sure. This pin was broken on mine, when I first got it. (Maybe because a previous "mechanic" had tried to change the modulator for shifting problems, instead of repairing the vacuum leaks.)

Symptoms of very erratic/no shifting on a constant basis.

SD Blue - Not sure if we are talking about the same thing. - I can't find any exploded pictures that show the part. When you remove the vacuum modulator, the part is in the transmission and the plastic "cup" is what the modulator goes into, but when I removed the modulator, I happened to look at the bottom of it (the plastic "cup" came out with it) and it looked like it was supposed to have something attached to it. I looked into where it fit and sure enough saw the rest of it in the transmission. I used needlenose pliers and pulled the "stem" out of the transmission and it was about 2 to 2 1/2 inches long. I assume it is supposed to be attached to the cup shaped piece. Does this sound like the pin you are talking about?

I believe this may be what you are talking about:

On my year an model the DIYs say it is common for the Modulator Valve to break when you remove the Modulator and if you wanted to finish the job all at one and not have to wait for parts it was suggested to order the Valve a long with the Modulator.

That because the price of the Modulator Valve is kind of minimum.

SDBlue - yep that's it - how appropriate to call it a modulator valve pin! At least it is cheap. Diesel911 - how true. Now, does it hurt to drive it with this being broken, until I get the new one? I figure if pressure is coming from the bottom it shouldn't hurt.
