99 E300 with Mirror Fluid Stains Won't Come Clean !

I have had a failure of the left side mirror and the fluid is leaking out, badly staining the white door panel. I have removed the mirror itself to prevent additional stains, but removing the melted chocolate-like residue escapes me.
I have used Oxyclean, 409, liquid dish soap to no avail.

Any ideas from someone who has been there before.

The second bummer is this mirror is not a cheap replacement @ $430+ at the dealership, $268 @ Fastlane.

Thanks

WD40 will take that off safely.

I will try WD40 in the AM. Hope it works.

This is the fluid in the face of the dimming mirror. I have a crack in the bottom of the rubber perimiter allowing this material to leak out.

Thanks

If you can live without the dimming function, you can do what I did with my darkened non-leaky mirror. I ordered a flat mirror piece on ebay that was cut to match my mirror shape. It even came with four sticky pads to glue it on top of the old one. It was very cheap - $20 range IIRC and two months later, still holding. The fit was very good.

I can look up the seller if you want to go this route, let me know.

When I bought my '97 it was permanently dimmed. I thought it was the stupidest thing until I drove at night and realized it's very nice when driving in traffic. I would have liked to replace the faulty mirror but as you pointed out, it's pretty pricey.

The fluid is 95% drained this AM, my plan is to reinstall when MT.
I will price up a replacement, Fastlane does not appear to sell the dimming unit.

I agree with you on the night time benifits of the OEM mirror, I will see how it works out. No pun intended....
