Question What is this button for?

Do not have the manual for the 87 300D . What does this button do? Control the rear headrest?

Yes it is a vaccum operated release for the rear headrests.

It is not working then. It is controlled by vacuum? I will check the vacuum lines. What is the default position? It is down now.

Thanks

put the rear headrests up, then press the button. They should flop down.

Fun to scare the $%$% out of your rear seat passengers! I just wish they had a way to come to the up position by the button.

They do in later models, can bring them down AND up. Pretty neat.

The engine has to be running and as the car ages you might need to hold the button for 5 seconds or so.

That would mean vacuum leaks....if it doesn't go instantly then the system is leaking. They drop instantly on our 300E when you hit the switch.

Correction, key has to be on ACC but the engine doesn't have to be running if there's residual vacuum in the system. In my car it takes a 2 count for the first to flow then the second follows in a half count.
