190D / E Ignition Tumbler Removal

I have read several posts ( printed them off ) from various forums on the technique of removing the lock tumbler from the ignition body. I spent several hours trying to accomplish this proceedure using 2 diff. ign. switches and have yet to succeed. I am convinced that I'm missing some small subtle aspect of this task. I hope someone can clarify or help me thru the completion of this process. I have been doing a dsl conv. on a 1987/8 190E you can follow the comple ted conv. here. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/320825-starting-my-diesel-conversion-2-2-into-87-190e-body.html

Thanks

Just trying to understand all detail...
1. you do have a correct key to the lock?
2. you can use this key to turn the tumble?

Yes I have both keys for both switches, I was hoping to take both tumblers out and switch them so I didn't have to carry two seperate ign keys. One for the ign and one for the doors.

I had to do the same job in my 87 190E, but my tumbler stopped turning, It was a huge job with hack saws and the steering column had to be removed.
Had I been able to turn the key it would have been much much easier.
once you remove the lower dash panel you can see how to disconnect it from the column. then as long as you can turn the key in the existing one it should be simple.
