How to repair your odometer for pocket change

I've found the gears needed to repair the odometer. Got mine working for a little more than pocket change, but well worth it!

12 tooth motor gear, $0.51 + shipping:
https://sdp-si.com/eStore/PartDetail.asp?Opener=Group&PartID=1148&GroupID=338

12/48 tooth gears directly after the motor, $2.37 each, X2= $4.74
Part No.: GC0.5-12/48-20
from: Product Listing compound gear

I personally got some stainless steel washers to put in to make up for slightly different gear built in spacers but it appears they are unnecessary, but might be a good idea to order just incase.
I would be glad to find all the varying gears for other member's odometers, all I need to know is the tooth count, and if enough members would like I could organize a group buy, chances are, if enough members are interested, a gear set for an odometer could be as little as $10 shipped. Let me know

Cheers,
Mike

P.S.
can make a how to if needed but it's pretty straight forward. The only hard part is getting the old motor gear off the shaft. I used pliers and crushed it different directions untill it broke.

Hello,

The gears seem to be of fair quality. I couldn't much compare them to the OEM ones since they were disintegrated, but they are just about the same material as any gear you would find in a CD rom drive, a personal cd player, etc. they seem to be made of the same plastic as most too. I believe they have slightly less surface area but should last just fine. I think part of the problem with the OEM gears may be the grease on them from the factory. Not all plastics are grease compatible, and some shrink. My gears were seized on their shafts, then the teeth got broken off. I'll let you guys know how these hold up, have 4.8 miles on them so far!

Cheers,
Mike

Cool! I've seen some other site charging upwards of $25 for each gear! Even if it means fixing it more than once it is still worth it.

Junkman,

I did have a spreadsheet of all the dimensions somewhere on my computer, I'm trying to find it, but here's what I remember off the top of my head:
2mm shafts throughout (get a motor gear or a regular gear with a 1.9mm bore, or if it's a metal gear get a 2mm bore and loctite 609)
.5 module (pitch)
the bore, module, and teeth count are what's most important. With that information you can find the gears you need. I did micrometer the gears out but I am unable to find the spreadsheet at the moment. If you need the measurements I can find the OEM gears, just let me know. I didn't go past the last 12/48 gear since all the remaining gears were fine.

Cheers,
Mike

Found some pics. Here's the OEM gears in place:

not much to see. Broken gears:

one of the old gears against the new one, you will notice the gear's face is a little less wide

they still fit in perfectly, but this is the wrong motor gear! I had to order the right one before it would work!

I ordered some gears from the links you provided.
They came straight out of China.
Just put them in, works great.

Thanks for the research Mike.

Thanks a lot. I've been waiting for information like this, so I rushed to the site to order the gears and wouldn't you know it, they are our of stock Part No.: GC0.5-12/48-20. I sent them an email inquiring about when would they get some more. Will see what happens. I got a quick response. They updated their quantities so I was able to complete my order.
