1986 190d transmission issue

Need some help here please. The car has been running fine but not shifting right when then trans is cold...at the shift points it kinda of lunges like pushing on the gas pedal and letting off then I back off the gas and it shifts. Only did this when everything was cold. I'm sure it's vacuum related...no big deal. But this morning, it went into reverse fine, but in drive it would barely move even with high rpms and moving the gear selector almost didn't get it back in the garage. Is it time for a new tranny or is it something else...has 238k on it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Check your fluid level. Sounds like classic low fluid symptoms especially if it is okay/better once it warms up.

Checked fluid level cold and it was low...last time I did it was warm. Added 2 quarts and backed it out of garage and saw puddle of fluid I just poured in on the floor. So Im assuming I'm screwed and it's a bit more than a leak. Gave up for the night. Never noticed a puddle of any sort prior just a few drops maybe. Any thoughts???

I think I found the problem...I will search the forum but does any one have the diagram of the tranny. I think the tranny is fine but it looks like there is what appears to be the kick down cable where is goes in the side of the tranny. There was a approx 3" plunger the was laying in the bottom of the pan that was letting the fluid poor out. I need to know what holds that in, if there its a bolt, o-rings or what. Any help or info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
