Looks to me like a dead transmission. (300td)

Turning the corner yesterday, the automatic transmission on my 82 300td finally let loose. Very loose. No engagement in forward or reverse, just some clunking and light grinding noises upon acceleration. I had the world's shortest tow to the street in front of my mechanic around the corner, but I'm guessing this is more than just a B2 piston (my understanding is that reverse would work if that was the case). He hasn't looked at it yet.

I've been having harsh downshifts for awhile, particularly from 2-1. And, on top of that, my parking brake has been inoperable (I know, I know), which isn't healthy, especially when parked on hills. I can't say I was surprised.

Debating putting in a rebuilt transmission, a used transmission, or just junking the car (quite a bit of rust). Anybody know any sources for these things in Oakland or the East Bay?

Thanks,
Marshall

If it is still there, in the PNP yard in San Jose on Monterey Rd. there is an 82 300D. last row in the back, dark blue. this weekend is a 50% off sale, I`ll be there on Thursday morning ripping into a car I spotted a few days ago.

There is also a 81 300D 227K miles, but that one is probably a different transmission.

With the Tool Kit rewards card, I get in a day early on the sale.

How hard is it to remove a transmission at a pick & pull without experience? What tools are required & how long would it take?

Thanks,
m

Some people have experienced your symptoms when the piece that the flex disk attaches to got disconnected from the output shaft. I'd definitely check that before condemning the transmission itself.

I pulled a 4 spd from a 240d at a P&P in a couple of hours. Not sure about an auto. Sockets and extensions and box end wrenches for the flex disks and a small pry bar to separate the flexdisc.

Thanks, Kerry. I forgot about the flexdisc. It's one of those many things I meant to check long ago and never did. It's entirely possible mine has failed. Are they visible from underneath the car or do you have to remove anything to check them?

It's not the flexdisc, it's the yoke that it attaches to which is bolted on to the output shaft. You might be able to test it by jacking up the back wheels, putting the transmission in park and seeing if you can spin the driveshaft by turning the wheels. If you can, the driveshaft is not connected to the transmission or the parking pawl has failed.

I have pulled 4-spd manual transmissions from under the car. those weigh around 54lbs.

A automatic trans weighs far more, I know I don`t want to be under it and have it coming down on me unless my name is Arnold and was Governor.

I would just pull the eng and trans and seperate once out of the car. PNP has Gantry Crains ( A frame on wheels) to lift the engines out. I have pulled around 4 engines by my self in the yards.
PNP does not allow jacks in the yards.

Hack saw to cut out the front cross piece (radiator support)
Razor Blade knive to cut hoses
Bolt cutter/Dykes to cut through wiring
Pliers/ screw drivers
Socket set.
Channel locks to loosen center nut on DL.
Open/box wrench set.

The transmission X mount has 4 17mm bolts holding it to the body. and there are 2 14mm nuts holding the trans mount to it. (could be 13mm)

The engine mount bolts take a 8mm hex bit

By loosening the center nut on the DL, it should seperate at the splines when pulling out the engine then remove it once on the ground.
Other wise you have to remove the bolts at the Flex Disk on the rear of the Trans. and those could be 15mm, 17mm, and some are a hex bit 8mm? and 15 or 17mm.

Before undoing anything, remove the black cover plate on the bottom of the Bell Housing, rotate the Torque Convertor to line up the 6 13mm bolts that hold it to the FW. they are in 3 groups of 2. you can rotate the conv. by using a prybar/large screwdriver through the slotted vent under the Bell Housing.

Probably forgot something here but a quick rundown.

I don`t know the milage on the 82, the spedo was gone. so it is a crap shoot as to the condition of the trans.

Deliveryvalve posted some pictures of a flex plate that cracked a couple years back.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/272220-poll-have-you-ever-heard-experienced-broken-flexplate-80-300d.html

I had the flange loosen on my 4-spd in the 240D. I had the U-Joint replaced and was replacing the DL and noticed the Flange was loose and wobbley. removed it and the splines inside it were worn to a point. didn`t hurt the trans splines. this was some of my rumbling I was getting along with the U-joint.

Replaced the Flange with a good used one, and things have smoothed out.

Transmission not dead yet!

Finally got it to the mechanic. The transmission output flange had come off due to a broken output shift nut & broken transmission mount.
$256 later, the car runs again.

If you have no experience pulling one --ide find an experienced guy to help--- The flywheel to torque converter bolts are strangely hidden in a "window" at the rear of the oil pan casting-- But the real Muthu frrr is the starter bolts you should just take a 18 volt cordless drill and 1.5 " hole saw and cut a big acess hole to get at the bolts from the passenger side tranz tunnel.--you have to rip out the console and trim and the ps plastic ducting running along down the trans tunnel side and across the floorboard. or just buy my primo condition 722 303 from the 83 part car.
