What is worth 99 e 300 turbo diesel nowadays?

i have to admit, i've been gone for a while...driving 2001 dodge cummins turbo diesel...had some tdi experience too...there is for sale 99 e 300 turbo diesel with 150000 miles, silver, new tires, no rust, all works except a/c compressor must be seized..cannot move clutch...some noise from engine but seems to be comming from belt tensioner shock...transmission shifts correct...no blow-by, exhaust smoke only a little, recent glowplugs, removed catalytic convertor, some fuel leak around injection pump, hopefully from lines only...i had only like hour to see all of that...needs more diagnosis time to know exactly whats going on...i would love to sell my thirsty truck and get this mercedes...i just dont know what is realistic in these days....by the way, im certified toyota mechanic, so i'll do the work, only price of parts is the problem....thanks for your help!!!

PIctures would be a big help in evaluating this car.
Condition is everything. It is a good sound car in general with no glaring weaknesses, i believe. It is one model I have thought I would like to own myself.;)

Thanks Mate, of course condition is everything...leather seats are nice, paint has some rock chips and tiny fading, headliner clean, power seats works, only small cracks in dash, headlights heavy fading, ...but all over it is on nice side...owner is asking $7, i'm thinking $5 because of the a/c...compressor itself is $700.....and thats just beginning...i dont know if its holding charge or leaks from evap core in dash...its a lot of risk....aloha

Personally, if I were in the mkt, I would be all over it. Figure worst case disassembling the complete a/c to blow everything out good. I'd be surprised to see the evap gone but there may be metal in the system. Where is the car located?

phyxer 09-05-2012 06:58 PM

Here in Florida, a 99 with those miles and working a/c go for 8-10k.
So if you can get it at 6-7k and you do the work, you should be good. If you can get it for 5k, nice. But I wouldn't walk away from it at 6k.

From what you have said about the car, sounds like a good deal, even if the seller wont budge on the price, I just got 6,500 for my 96 non turbo with 212k about a year ago. If you buff out the headlamps and fix the AC and the belt tensioner and find that you dont care for the car, you should have no problem getting 9k for it, Anyone who knows the mercedes diesels knows the 24V turbo model is the one to have if you have the cash flow to buy one.

I think I've got a good used a/c compressor if you need it. ...edit...came off a wrecked '98 that I parted out with only 138,000 on it. It'll be cheap if you need it, finally cleaning up the garage!

I just had Mercedes install a rebuilt AC compressor. Rebuilts go for about $300 or so.

Good deal. You will like this car and will find it easy to work on. The only negative is the cost of parts in my opinion.

Can you turn the center part of the compressor pulley by hand? If you can that is probably a good sign reflecting that there may not be any metal in the system.

Replace all of those damn O-rings. Don't piddle around trying to find the "one" that leaks. Somewhere on this forum is a post with the part numbers for the plastic fuel lines.

$5-6K or so. Parts deals are good online. Just look for a legitimate source. :)
