Considering a W140 purchase, thoughts?

Thinking of getting my first W140 diesel sedan. I've done many 3.5L to 3.0L swaps to eliminate the rod bender, so I'm not concerned about the engine at all. But how does the W140 compare to the W126 in other areas?

I know it's a electrical and climate control nightmare, but as far as running reliability, is it on par with the W126?

Any input would be appreciated. I am leaning toward passing in it, just because I'm looking to slim down my collection and wrap up projects, as it looks like I still may need to relocate for my job.

Thoughts?

The 140 is a Cadillac compared to the 126. Quieter, softer, lighter steering... A lot of the systems are understood by now so there's plenty of support to keep the systems going, even systems the 126 never had like closing assist. This site and v12uberalles.com should keep you going.

I've had 2 140s and 4 126s and as magnificent as the 126 is I don't think I'll ever go back.

What is it that makes people back away from the 140.... the electrical.

I know the engine has a bad rep but read somewhere that if it doesn't happen early on in the engine life <150k then most likely it won't

Is the swap pretty straight forward to put the 3.0 in..... everything plug and play??

In a W126, it's a day job. I've done many of them. In a W140, I would imagine the harness and vacuum routing is different, but I would think a few days max. I've actually started wondering if I should part with a couple W126's and pool some money with some cash set aside and spring for a 06 or 07 W211 E320 CDI. Each time I drive to Atlanta, it's 1,000 miles roundtrip, and those cars seem made for those long routine drives with the MPG they get.

Mostly the electrical but there are additional vacuum systems as well for closing assist and parking guide rods.

Swapping the engine is straightforward. It'll take a little longer because you'll want to keep the 140's more streamlined exhaust manifold, the 603.96 side sump doesn't fit the 140's K-member and IIRC the oil cooler fittings are positioned differently on the oil filter housing. If so you have to swap the oil filter housing. I did for good measure. Whether you pull the engine alone or with the tranny, the @#$%! cable harness that bolts to the bell housing is a PITA to release and reattach.

It could be less plug and play if you're presented with a 603.96 with its original #14 head. Do you keep the running engine together or swap over the #17 or later head from the 3.5? If you swap heads, do you use the #17 or later head as is, replace valve stem seals or send it for a full on valve job? When you have the pan off for swapping, do you replace the crank and rod bearings? When the pan and head are off, do you pull the front cover to replace the chain guides and oil pump chain? Where does it end?
