1995 300D RUNS ROUGH UNTIL OPERATING TEMP

I have a 95 300D that runs rough when first started. White smoke comes out as it sputters. Once I start it again and give it a little peddle to keep it running its fine.

Need advice!

My first suspicion would be failed glow plugs.

X3 check Glow Plugs.

Whites smoke. Atomized unburned Fuel or Coolant.

It could also need a valve adjustment. As the engine warms up and the cam towers expand, clearance will be restored to a valve that was tight when the engine was cold. As others have said, GP's would be the first place to look.

No valve adjustments needed or possible

No valve adjustments in the OM60x engine family.

Atomized unburned fuel would appear black. White smoke is a very strong indication of coolant entering the cylinders, Check you coolant levers periodically and make sure you aren't consuming any.

Possible explanation, very small crack in cylinder head or head gasket that seals as the engine expands. Had a very similar problem in the TD about 2 years ago now. ended up being the head.

If you don't see it leaking anywhere then it is going through the engine.
