Transmission 722.357 and boost
In common with many happy souls on this forum, I too am spending all my idle hours wondering how I can tweak my tranny. I have always had a soft 3-4 shift, and have my modulator turned up to keep it acceptably firm. That, of course, means I get a too-hard 2-3 shift. 1-2 is perfect and all downshifts are fine.
Question: Should there be a vacuum/pressure line from the inlet manifold to the modulator vacuum, to provide a control input from turbo boost? Mine has a line from the inlet manifold to the ALDA, but no connection to the trans modulator. Also does anyone have a schematic for the hydraulic valve logic in the valve body? 1994 124 wagon 603960 3L turbo. (Japan import) (spending a lot of time watching vacuum gauge instead of road) |

I eventually managed to get this transmission to shift acceptably, but now another gremlin has crept in.
My tachometer no longer functions when car is cold, and the idle speed is very low. As it warms up, the tach comes back intermittently, accompanied by 4th gear flare (slippage) each time. Is there an engine speed sensor that controls the tach and idle speed? Maybe the slight extra power supplied by the idle speed system is causing the flare? All my in-laws now know about the problems with this tranny, but my wife, bless her, is willing to persevere. Some day I'll get it right! |

Tachometer air conditioning kickdown starter ring gear sensor
The tach eventually died completely, the air conditioning stopped, and the kickdown stopped working. So after lots or reading and testing the engine speed sensor (open circuit) I replaced that ( 0105422217 ) and now all is well again.
I got the sensor on EBay as NOS, described as an engine position sensor. but it's not. It is an inductive sensor with a magnet and coil, and generates an AC signal using the starter ring gear teeth. Thanks to all the contributors on here, it is so satisfying to keep this old stuff running! |
