Power Steering Redux

As some may know from my previous post, I have just R&R my power steering pump to replace a leaking seal. I refilled with DEXRON III, the recommended fluid for my 1983 300CD.

Steering is now very stiff at walking speed. Feels as though there is no power boost at all. Belt tension is correct, pulley turning, fluid correct level and apparently no entrained air. WTF?

This is not rocket science. The only thing I can think of is that DEXRON III is not right for this car. Can anyone help with similar experience and repair?

Not to insult your intelligence, but did you go from lock to lock while filling?

Other than hooking the lines back up, installing and adjusting the belt, what did you do? How much fluid went into the system?

Went lock to lock After filling, with cap off to bleed. BTW, very hard to turn wheel engine running. Felt same as engine off.

Filled reservoir to mark, then topped back to mark after pump filled lines. Took a reservoir full, the a little more.

Road tested. Steering fine except un-boosted.

Not insulted. I'm willing to be a dum**** if we can fix this.

Are you sure the new pump is good?

You did not by chance swap the supply and return lines going into the pump...

Not a new pump. Simply replaced the shaft seal on my old, working perfectly pump. I'm sure I did not swap lines. I removed the return line at the clamp.

How far apart did you take the pump to change the seal? ( Did you take the shaft out or the flow control valve? )

Most any fluid would make the power steering work so Dex isn't a issue.

If you had the shaft out, the outer pump ring might be clocked / flipped over causing the pump to work backwards. ( but not very well since fluid flow would be to the reservoir )

If you had the flow control valve out it may have been reassembled backwards / spring on the wrong side.

No problem, just trying to rule out the simple stuff....

X2

On the control valve.

When I took my Vickers type 24 pump to bits it didn't pump anymore.

In the end the control valve need cleaning and all was well

power steering pump followup

No joy bleeding pump. I isolated fault to the pump itself. Since this is my daily ride, I bought a rebuilt ps pump from Phil on the PeachPart site. Installed and working fine.

When I have a break in the action I will disassemble old pump to find out what went wrong with it. I suspect I damaged it when using a hammer blow to the shaft to remove the pulley. Didn't hit it very hard but oh well.

I'll be back with a final report in time.
