Can install the engine from my 97 E300D into a 96 E300D?

I was wondering what else would need to be modified to make this work? One issue is the ECU would it work with the 97 engine?

How would the tranny match up since the 97 was the first year for the 5speed electronic transmission? Thanks

if you have everything for your 96 handy, swap should be simple. plenty of items may need swapping from old motor.

The '96 has a remote mounted VCV which its 722.3 transmission needs so you should be able to stay with the '97 IP if the electronics don't mind.

Transmission is 722.438 but otherwise your statement is correct.

jmbeam, I don't follow your posts like a groupie but it seems your '97 E300 tranny is stuck in second gear. Have you thrown as much money at it as replacing the conductor plate and the connector seals? That's about $150 in parts plus a SDS reset before embarking on an engine and/or transmission swap. It seems to be what gets a lot of 722.6's going again. You have more information than the equivalent of an AAMCO tech's advice, right? Have you consulted with MB Doc in the tech forum?
