83 240d won't turn off

Ignition switch will not shut down engine. Took vac line off at fuel pump and hooked up vacpump engine would shut off with vacpump. Then hooked vacpump to vac line at ignition switch and engine would shut off. What do I need to check now? There are two lines hooked to the ign switch is there a test that needs to be performed on the other line?
Thanks for your help.
Mark

Put it back together they way it is supposed to be.
Disconnect the Vacuum Line that connects the Vacuum Shutoff on the Fuel Injection Pump.
Connect that Vacuum line to your Vacuum Gauge and with the Engine running there sould be no Vacuum showing on the Gauge.
Have someone turn the Key off and see how much Vacuum is showing on the Gauge when the Key is turnned off.

Put every thing back together and find a way to connect your Vacuum Gauge to the main Vacuum Line before it gets to the Check Valve in the Main Line.
Measure the Vacuum and see if it is the same as you were getting when the Gauge was connected to the Line that had been disconnected from the Shutoff.
The Main Vac line sould have 22-24 inches Hg; Vacuum?
If you are getting less Vacuum then the Main Line has I would suspect the Vacuum Valve on the Steering Colum is having an issue.

Also when you disconnected the Vac Hose at the Vac Shutoff was there any Engine Oil in it? If there is Engine Oil being pulled through the Vacuum Shutoff Diaphragm at some point it will need to be replaced; but they can still shutoff like that for some time.

I wont be able to look at it again until later in the week. I have checked the main line and get the 22-24hg of vac. I'll post what I find out about the rest later this week. Thanks for the info Diesel 911.

Finally got to look at it. Main vac line hose shows 20in hg. Line going from key switch to injection pump shows 0in hg when key is on. When key is turned to off position vac reading is less than 5in hg (with mighty vac it took 8in hg to shut engine off). Tested other line that runs from main vac line to key switch, it shows less than 5in hg. Does it sound like it could be a leak in the lines that run from the main hose to the key switch? If it is taking 7 to 8in hg to shut it off and it's getting less than 5in hg at the switch.

Could also be a bad key switch.

There are two vac lines that hookup to the key switch, it has a constant about 4in hg when car is running. The other line runs from the key switch to the injection pump, it shows 0in hg until the key is switched off, then it reads the same under 4in hg as the other line. Makes me think the switch is working, I'm just not getting enough vac to the inj. pump to shut it off. Is about 7in hg sound about right to shut down the inj pump? I know this sound stupied but I've thought about making the vac line running to the inj pump longer and attach my mighty vac to it to shut it off until I have more time to work on it.
