Brue Kennedy added a manual CC from a 240 into his 85 300TD.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/187373-climate-control-manual-conversion.html

In this thread he mentions the 80 240D is the best yr to swap in.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/211899-climate-control-conversion-editorial-coming-near-future.html

Also 280ezrider added one to his W123 280E.

If you have the MB FSM for the Climate Control systems it is helpful. It shows the 3 types they used and how they work.

You will have to remove the dash, console, pull off the knobs/nuts and face plate. Be careful with the 240`s front piece the knobs and fan switch attach to, it will brake if you are rough with it. I have pulled 4 of these and 2 were broken

Disconnect the water connections on the firewall and the 2 cables that connect to the on/off water valve. there is also the one hose connection on the drivers side.

Then it is just a matter of labeling the wires and cables so you know where they go. 2 straps and a few other connectors.

Dave Morrison did a good DIY on the Evaperator cleaning in this thread.
he is removing both the 240D and 300TD units.

revisit this idea

Okay.....so if one uses the ENTIRE airbox from a manual climate system from a 240D and puts it into a 300D, does that (can that) elimiate all the vacuum pods?

Yes, I've read Dave Morrison's excellent write up (DIY Wiki) on replacement of evaporator.
Yes, I've read Bruce Kennedy's posts.
Yes, I've read Gavin Leslie conversion post & DIY Wiki.

Yes, I know I have to pull the dash, etc.....

No you won`t eliminate the Vac Pods, but you don`t need them for heat to the Def or heat to the floor. there is one on the right side, but it opens when the AC Knob is twisted (80 240D & prior), or the Roller Wheel is used (82 - 83 240D).

There is another Vac pod on the left for another door as I remember.

As you read through the various AC threads, there are not too many complaining about the 240D`s. It always about the Evil Servo, Mono Valve and PBU (push button unit).

My 80 240D doesn`t even have a aux water pump.

just one ???

I only found ONE vacuum pod --- it's located to the far right of the airbox and controls the fresh air flap. I haven't taken the airbox apart yet...though.

Maybe I should post this on a different thread.
