what's a mildly worn 240K 95E300 Diesel worth?

runs fantastic, zero rust I can find. (well, possibly a paint bubble on a door) looks like it had a respray on the back, possibly the entire car. cold A/C, decent back tires, fronts are at the wear bars. no spare, slight tear in the arm rest console.

I'm thinking about getting it, but think I can find a better deal. it'll take a bit of work to make it pristine, the body feels loose, but all the suspension is intact, no worn bushings I can find. it must need shocks.

A deal breaker for me would be even one snapped glow plug. Assuming good glow system and wiring harness i'd say $3500-$4000

Price paid by the buyer might depend somewhat on his willingness to fix issues as they exist and occur himself. With paid for service only is a different thing. With such an individual free is too expensive sometimes.

There are just too many factors involved to guess what a fair price is on an older car. That the fair price is variable is an understatment. Again it depends on the individual. Fortunatly most people that pay for doing everything will in all probability avoid this car. So the market for it should not be too large..

Unfortunatly some of this has to be learnt by individuals. That increases the markatability to some degree. Some of the younger generation are so paranoid about repair costs today. They dump their cars as soon as the warranty expires and add additionally to thier debt load as it was not paid for yet. They just feel better in a fixed known cost situation.

good advice. I have not started the car cold. the glow plug harness is totally cracked up. missing a lot of insulation. I'm thinking some of the harness was replaced, as the wrapped sections on the engine appear totally new, but the section feeding the GP relay are in bad shape. the seller is a auction flipper, zero in the car on his end, and he wants a good chunk of change for the car... the idea of a 124 that has decent power on the road, and can achieve 40mpg has me interested, plus the interior parts it needs I have sitting on the shelf in my garage... along with plenty of stuff to keep the car up. the GP cover bolts are all stripped... as are the bolts on the intake crossover... big red flags. also, the seller had to bring the car to his house for me to look at it, thus I did not get to see how it started cold... a melted harness to the GP's would not hurt anything unless it shorted to ground, and it's in a heavy plastic conduit... but a broken GP scares the bejesus out of me... and I did not have the tools to pull stripped headed cover screws...
I am still teetering on the fence about the car...

John,
Don't forget that at 240k, the vac pump should be replaced not rebuildable, not cheap. Other things would be easy, like brake hoses, rotors, flex disks, orings on the fuel pipes, trans cooler lines. A rotten exhaust could also cost you some coin.

1995 E300 Diesel

Forget about 40 MPG. Low 30s highway, high 20s city. You might see mid 30s if you can keep your speed down to 60 MPH on a long stretch of freeway but this car is so much fun to drive fast that I doubt you'll be able to. The 90-liter (23.8 gallon) fuel tank gives you a range of 700+ miles at low-30s MPG, which is great.

My car had significant work (by the second owner) on the wiring system, new engine mounts, serpentine belt tensioner, etc., before I got it. The first owner had the car repainted (quality work, fortunately). I got the car at 190K in what many folks would call "perfect" condition and paid $4700. Newer diesels tend to sell for a little more here in California because of their relative rarity. The only significant mechanical work I've done was to replace the front flex disk; everything else I've done has been cosmetic stuff and regular maintenance.

At 240K you'll want to replace the vacuum pump just for safety's sake, and there may be suspension items and other things to fix. I'd be cautious about shelling out a lot of bucks for what you describe as a car with significant question marks being sold by a flipper (who therefore doesn't know much about it).

Jeremy

They're about $350 right?

Any other parts that can lead to sudden catastrophic failure on this car ?
