1959 190D

Nice-looking 1959 190D for sale in Montreal for $5500. Looks like a very nice car at the price. Looks pretty well original, including original Becker radio and speakers! Owner claims it cost him $12,000 in 2005, and it was appraised earlier this year at $7500.

I have no connection with the seller, just thought the ad may interest someone looking for an earlier 190D.

Interestingly, a very similar 190D won a trans-Africa race in 1959, as I earlier indicated on here:

There was one for sale a few year back here but it had so much rust I coulda been a flinstone. Parts are hard to find and no one knows how to fix them. I passed even at $800.

Interesting, hadn't thought about the parts issue, but I assumed those older diesel cars were even simpler to repair than the later models... Better stick with my good old W123 240D!! Plus I have at least another 20 ponies under the hood (!) compared to that 190D. Would have been something to drive a brand new 190D across Africa though!

Yeah, I can imagine these late 50's 190D's must have rust as bad if not worse than the W116's that came after. I remember seeing a W116 gas sedan for sale cheap, came with a big stainless steel chest of parts, owned by a retired gentleman who had painstakingly replaced the entire floor himself, in the trunk as well, with steel, that he had RIVETED on (didn't know how to weld). The car looked lovely inside and out, but that riveted floor made it unappealing in spite of the low price. I could imagine that old gentleman meticulously fixing this car, collecting and storing parts carefully, and now in spite of his labor of love, his son in law was stuck with an unsellable yet lovely looking car.
Darn that rust!

Rust is a problem, but parts aren't that hard to find. We've got a ponton group with over 900 owners and parts are readily available.

For some reason the ponton style just doesn't do it for me. I like the exterior look of the fintail, but I think the weird vertical speedometer would drive me nuts. I would love a W136 170D (but probably adulterate it with a turbo 617 if I could make it fit).

I looked in the social groups section, but didn't notice a Ponton group or club -- Enlighten me please.

I owned two fintails back in the day.....both pretty rusty in the floor pan.

A friend had a ponton for a while. I think its possible that the pontons might be a little better on rust.
