Just saw this go up today

1980 MERCEDES BENZ 240D

It;s at the local mercedes dealer over in cary. Called them and they are asking $5900 they say it has 85k and is flawless except the odometer quit working. I was going to mozy over to look at it tomorrow. Is it worth that much? Some days it seems more appealing to buy one of these than to have three partially fixed ones wasting away in the backyard and listen to the wife crab about how much money I've spent and how much my "hobby"costs.

The pictures look good. I'm always suspicious of a claimed low-mileage car that just happens to have a broken speedo. If the car is in such great shape why don't they get the speedo repaired? Since you already have three 240s I'll skip the part about 240Ds with automatic transmissions.

Maybe they put an extra 0 on the price? That is what I would suggest to them.

What I have learned about the MBZ diesels in general is no matter how much you spend on them, they are a $1,000 to $2,000 car.

Low mileage claims on a 30 y.o. Mercedes mean nothing w/o records to back it up, even if the odometer is working. And it's not working on this car. MB odometers from this era are not robust and they all tend to break at some point. Repairing them costs about $160 @ North Hollywood Speedometer, (plus shipping if you are not local), if you can remove the instrument yourself.

Service or maintenance records with dates and odometer readings throughout the years are the only trustworthy verification of mileage on our cars. That said, a couple things come to mind. Having owned many MB cars from that era with various mileage and wear on them, under 100k miles is very believable on that 240D. It looks pristine in the pictures, particularly the interior. Interiors generally don't lie, a 100k rubber brake pedal pad does not look like a 150k or 200k one. These are rarely replaced or changed. Same with the factory steering wheel; the degree of wear is very telling...the driver's hands are like sand paper over many years, smoothing down the texture of the vinyl on the wheel. Obviously seats tell a story as well, but can vary a lot depending on the size of the driver and whether they wore jeans with a chain wallet or a smooth skirt.

I have owned many w123s and own 3 right now; a mint 115k mile wagon, a 150k mile sedan and wagon with 200+ showing on a broken odometer. The high-miler probably has at least 300k on it based on wear but it runs well. Each car easily belies its mileage w/o looking at the odometer if you know how to look at these cars.

If the dealer selling the car in the OP had a clue about the market for these cars, they would get the odometer fixed and put it on eBay. Germans bid on really clean, original diesels with low miles and the price structure is as un-linear as any vehicle on earth. IOW, a nice driver 240D from a rust-free region is a $3500 car and a low-mileage car in mint condition can be a $12-15k car. A 65k mile 1979 300D wagon in showroom condition recently went for $33k on eBay. Yes, you read that right. Collectors and Europeans are not interested in 98% of the cars for sale, hence the *two different markets* for old diesels. I think that the car in the OP could fall into the expensive market. $6k is a steal for it if it is as good as it looks.

It looks really clean and if it was serviced at an MB dealer, at least you know things were likely done right, not just some flipper on ebay who happened upon a nice car.

Definitely worth a look, but Id want to put some time into it to make sure that the AC and any possible rust spots are well looked over...

These cars, especially the AT 240D cars, can be found with low, low miles...

anybody with a few simple tools and a pair of pliers can fix the odometer for free...

a full body inspection would be required to believe anything about a car from a dealer, especially one selling a car under 100K for under $6K...

GOSH!

I have a tiny bit more trust in it being that it is being sold at a dealer. Id pick it up if I was in the market...
