Unhappy Cam Timing after head gasket R&R

Ok so i know this is going to start off bad.... Couldn't find the timing mark on the cam washer when I pulled it apart... Found close to TDC and marked the chain and sprocket... Had a helper cleaning parts when reassembling.... He cleaned that stubborn red spot off the gear for me... HMMMM guess i forgot to tell him PAINT STAYS WHERE PAINT IS. So after doing some reading it appears i need a dial indicator to find true TDC through the injector hole and set the cam to its mark (No prechambers installed yet).. Am i missing an easier way? How accurately will that make things... Chain stretch etc affect this method? I do not own an indicator but would be willing to purchase one if necessary.. I have always been able to find all info i have ever needed with both my 616 &617 here and never needed to post myself. However i finally need to ask..

Was the engine at TDC when you removed the cam? Did you rotate the crank or IP while the cam was off? If nothing moved, put the sprocket on the cam (at TDC) and keep all the chain slack on the tensioner side.

Well Here is where the balancer marks are..Hasn't moved. Knew it was somewhere close to TDC but the notch on the cam washer was non locatable, Wasnt all that worried since i had a nice mark on chain and sprocket and wasnt planning on spinning the motor for any reason. Or replacing anything else. That would affect timing. Now i know better to make sure things are set before any teardown.

That's 2-3 degrees ATDC. Less than moving the chain one tooth on the cam sprocket will accommodate. Button it up, give the crank 2 full turns and check cam timing.

You might give the crank a gentle nudge to be sure there isn't slack between the IP and crank sprockets. I', comfortable doing this in a 603. Not sure if it's advisable in a 617.
