Pic goes to a For Sale ad. Looks pretty well done. Too bad there aren't some more pics.

Clacker and I are making plans to see it this weekend.

It's under an hour from both of us.

If you look at one with the thought of doing this, then the way it is done would work well. Save the last bit of roof and the pillers to come forward, with the end of the "cab" right at the vertical edge of the rear seat. this gives enough room inside. Door would be welded shut, top of door cut off to allow roof line to come forward. This would make about a 5-6ft bed. Skip making a tailgate and just leave the trunk rear as is for better structual integraty.

I want it. But I wonder what it drives like.

Even without a car on it, I imagine it wouldn't be able to get out of its own way....

On the BMW tow truck, I have no idea if the chassis is BMW or someone took a 1 ton Toyota mini truck and dropped a BMW body over it. The back of the "cab" was cut from a Nissan extended cap pickup according to the 80's mag article.

I'm of the opinion that a car is best used to haul people and a truck is best to haul (dirty) stuff. Kiddie haulers work for those doing the soccer/swimteam/baseball/.......tasks that parents of non-driving children get into but I note that my sister-in-law dumped her suv as soon as her last daughter got her license.

A Mercedes passenger car would need more suspension and more engine. I'd prefer the effort be put into into converting to a convertible D or SD which would have been a neat option and stayed with what the car was made for - people.

The car pickup has roots in 1920's Australia, they are called a " Ute ". I'm waiting for Ford to make a open top car pickup out of the Transit that has recently come to the US market.

A station wagon may be a better basis as the rear floor may be flatter and suspension stiffer.

In the 50's Mercedes used a 300 series ( ? ) to build a forward control car hauler and in CA the sports car racing team Scarab made a similar one out of some 60's Mercedes car.

And we were thinking of an MBz diesel in an ElCamino. Daily driver type of thing.
