W201 Speedo & Odo Changeout

I got an instrument cluster from the Pick&Pull yesterday, $25. It was laying on the floorboards of the 190E I've been pickin' on.

The speedos have small numbers on the bottom of the faces of those gauges.

1988 190E:
201 542 24 66

1987 190D 2.5T:
201 542 41 66

My guess is the gearing in these two instruments are not the same.

Can anyone estimate the speedo/odo errors if I just swap the 88 190E speedo into the 87 190D ??

What options can I do to make it right?

hmm it would all depend on what differential the car has..

Is your current speedo bad? you could always swap your current speedo into the other cluster.

The current speedo works. The current odo is bad.

The salvage odo appears to work. when I turned the cable attachment point, eventually the odo registered a 1/10th of a mile.

The 190E salvage cluster has:
"Premium Unleaded Fuel Only" and has an fuel economy gauge because its from a gasser.

I got the 190E cluster specifically to fix my 190D 2.5T odometer.

Ahh that makes more sense now.

Have you taken apart the D cluster to see exactly what the cause is? It might just be a simple gear that is dead. Post up photos when you take it apart.

Not yet. I was looking for good advice, like yours, before tearing it out. Thanks!

I had a 2.3 speedo a part a while ago. I dont remember much but there were two gears that looked like they could be problematic in the future. One was the main worm gear for driving thole thing. Another was one that went between the trip and odo. I THINK.

Check out these guys:
Odometer Gears - Mercedes-Benz - 190E (201) Chassis 82-93
