Serpentine belt Tensioner, 1987 300D turbo

My tensioner shock is making a lot of racket and the tensioner lever is jumping around a lot. Is is generally adviseable to replace the shock, the spring, the pulley and the lever all at once?

Guess I'll add it to the list of the other "can't wait" stuff like the vacuum pump and the timing chain guide rail. Do you know the procedure for checking the chain stretch?

Fortunately the car is parked in the garage right now and won't be used till I get it back into shape.

Ha! No. It's too early in the AM. I will be replacing the tensioner arm, the shock and the pulley, AND the belt which had a few chunks torn out of it when it came in contact with the fan.
I guess that the spring, unless it snaps from old age, should be just fine!

I thought the same thing... it snapps at VERY inopportune times. and finding a replacement is nigh impossible on a weekend...

Tensioner pulley $57.25
Tensioner lever $56.25
Tensioner spring $52.00
Tensioner shock $29.50
Belt $25.25

Not having to worry about your belt failing and leaving you stranded = priceless

But while you have the belt off be sure to check all your driven devices for bad bearings. You should not be able to move the pulleys back and forth on anything. This might open up a can of worms (it sure did for me) but now I know everything up front is solid.

Oh My! You know the spring has that pretty black plastic cover on it, so you can't see if it is corroded or anything. Luckily, living in the South, I have no rust or salt damage in my engine compartment. I will check my spring though.

when mine broke, it was not corroded, I saw no damage other than it being broken.

Always replace the spring, too.

Metal fatigue is not always visible especially on that part with it being under a sheath.

Just because it is not rusty does not mean it is not fatigued.

I guess it doesn't hurt replacing it if it has around 200k+ on it

Jay bob, the spring lever, is that the black plastic piece that swivels on the head and the spring connects to?

No the lever is the cast metal piece. The black plastic thing is separate. I reused mine.
