Chassis Lube

What kind of grease should I use? I am using Mobil 1 synthetic on my Superduty, would it be okay to use it on the 124?

It is written that you should not mix petroleum based and synthetic lubricants, specifically chassis greases, but we do it all the time and I am yet to see any problems, FWIW....

I was afraid someone would ask that. I don't really know yet, haven't crawled under there to see if there is anything with a grease zerk. Maybe now I won't have to?

it'd be nice if the ball joints were greasable, but no such luck. some have pulled the boots up, and shot some grease in there... I fail to see what that'd do, aside from grease the boot, since the grease needs to be under the ball to help, but it's better than letting it dry out, and fail...
nope, none of my MB's have any zerks... anyplace. well, the 123's have needle zerks in the door hinges...

Does this mean you can still buy cars in the US that have grease nipples?

Good question. The newest domestic I'm working on is an 01 Cherokee, I *think* it has them on the ball joints. No longer on the U joints or suspensions...

Wow.

I once read a scathing article in an English classic car magazine (may be about 20 years ago) berating British Leyland for still using grease nipples on their 1980s models such as the Maxi which had one hidden away on the steering column (if I remember that nugget of information correctly!).

Sealed for life bearings seem to be all the rage in most parts of the world these days - whether that's for the best or not is debatable. It most certainly fits in quite nicely with the desposable society attitude most manufacturers have these days...

...what ever happened to that Cadillac engine that was sold with engine oil that would never need changing? Or did that never actually make it into production? Or was there a lot of back pedalling after 12 months?!

Never heard of the magic caddie

For performance u joints, I'll take sealed-the grease jerk seems like a nice place for a crack to start. For the tractors and regular cars, I prefer grease-able.

For everything else, serviceable > replacement parts. I hate how many plastic bushings there are instead of greased surfaces.

My 87 diesel Landcruiser has got grease nipples all over the place. Some are not so accessible as others and require finesse, but they all work as they should. Its nice to be able to replace the grease in these joints. I wish the balljoints had them. I'm thinking of drilling-tapping to insert nipples on my Merc's balljoints as well. I know of one other guy who's done this as preventative maintenance.

There are greaseable frontend re-placement parts available for a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins --- I know. I bought the higher end parts that had the grease nipples. Of course, it was odd putting grease into those nipples; since I always thought nipples had other uses.

I think it was probably something that was mentioned when they introduced the Northstar but I guess they binned the idea...

...I did like the limp home idea those engines had. I think it was Top Gear or 5th gear who did a test in a desert somewhere but this was a long long time ago and I can't find a youtube copy...
