Gen II W126 Rear Axels - Swap Sides

Can rear axels of high milage i.e. 360k be swapped from side to side i.e. driver to passenger and vice versa.

Given good boots etc...I've read some where this can be a satisfactory (moderate & probably shorter longevity term) fix for CV joint wear slop.

Anyone hear of this...can't seem to find a thread, etc.

Also I'm currently seeing F E Q Brand axels for 75 bucks verses 500 plus.
I here they may be from not so great manufacturing materials or specs.

Any luck or lack of with these. Kind of tempting for a car I'm keeping but may not put another 40,000 miles on.

Thanks!

Are they making noise or have slop in them? If they're still tight just replace the grease and band clamp, and be on your way

I can twist them holding either end and feel some play. Not much but enought that I can also detect the slop when lugging around in 4th gear at slow speeds and coast / accelerate / coast i.e. on / off accelerator.

Repack I'm sure would help but I'd prefer to swap and repack

Check the part numbers for new one's. If they are the same, do it.

Sure, swap sides then the other internal parts will get the wear as you accelerate. won`t hurt a thing.

If the boots are not leaking and the axles are not making noise, I would leave as is, and swap.

Your call though.

When I pull good axles at PNP, I have some white nail polish I use to paint an "L" or a "R" so I know what side they came off of. then I`ll swap the axle to the other side when I install it.
