neutral safety switch 124 chassis

Where would it be on my 1987? Sometimes car will only crank in neutral, then for a while it is "fixed" and will crank in park. Is it in the console or on the tranny?

Driver's side of the tranny, behind the shifter lever. Might want to verify the shifter bushings on the shifter and tranny ends are in good condition as one or both being worn or missing can also cause that symptom to appear.

on my 123, there are 4 wires going to the neutral safety switch, 2 of which are purple, those are the 2 that need to connect to have the ignition engage- if you find yourself stuck/no start before you repair the problem, you can always jumper those 2 wires to get it started to get home. on my 240D the wires sorta come from the dash on through the floor near the accelerator pedal, i just tapped into them there rather than un the car and added a switch on the dash, so now i have a "safety neutral safety switch"

+1

The neutral safety switch is adjustable, I believe you can loosen up the 2 bolts and move it till it starts up in park
