What is the purpose of these fins
I was looking at my 85 w123 the other day and saw these fins behind the rain gutters on the rear pillar. I am sure you all have seen them.
Are they for aerodynamics?

Vents, while feeling there, close the door.

That is something that is only on the later cars. My 77 240D doesn't have them.

EDIT: I miss read the post and didn't see the fin under the chrome trim fin in the pic. None of the 123's I've owned had that. 77 300D, 78 240D, or the 82 300TD.

My '82 300D doesn't have them, no sunroof. My dad's '83 240D has them, it has a sunroof. Not sure about my '79 240D parts car, which has a sunroof.

My '83 has them, it is equipped with electric sunroof. Did wagons have them too? Our former '81 TD has manual sunroof but no fin in the same location. Same spot on wagons is also for rear sunroof drains.
I read somewhere it is for "cleaning the airflow" behind the vehicle. Somebody drove without them and noticed additional noise at speed. Reinstalled the fins and noise went away. On the same note, some of the W123's leading A-pillar edge had a thicker trim piece, while others had the thin type. Are these two related?

I believe they are. My 84 had the fins and the larger leading trim. |

It may be where the cabin vent is but I think it is shaped with the louver to help with aero. Let out the air in a lower pressure zone. My car also has the wrap around areas on the windshield. My guess is that they were improving the aerodynamics of the car as they made them.

I totally missed the fin behind the chrome trim fin in the first pic. I thought he was talking about the chrome one. Should have read it a little closer. I'll have to fix my statements now. None of the 123's I've ever owned had those. 77 300d, 78240, or the 82 300TD.

I think some '85 models did not have the large A pillar trim.
