[video] Normal or abnormal blowby? 1987 300TDT

1987 300td blowby - YouTube

FYI: This engine has coolant bubbles/pressure at idle and tests positive for combustion fumes in the coolant via the 'blue-liquid-turns-green-device' when put in place of the reserve tank cap. It took a minute or so but the liquid clearly turned from dark blue to green.
I have not seen any signs of oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil so I'm assuming a cracked head (it's a #14 that overheated after re-enabling the turbo by cleaning the turbo's clogged boost pressure line in conjunction with a failing water pump).

I'm curious what effect the cracked head has on the blowby. How does it look to you guys?

Answer

Looks average.

I suggest you stop running - driving it, or you will junk the engine soon.

Hunter, are you suggesting he stop driving it because of the blow-by, the combustion fumes in the coolant, or both? Just trying to learn. Thanks.

This type of damage is from coolant leaking into the combustion chamber.
Depending upon the leak location and cylinder topography/combustion wave form characteristics, pre-chamber, valve, piston and/or cylinder wall erosion - pitting can wreck the mentioned parts plus lead to broken rings.

This does not address the serious risk of sudden total head gasket failure, causing massive cylinder water ingestion = bent rods.

If the head were cracked to a water jacket no increase or decrease of blowby would be expected to occur. Is your hose really stiff first thing in the morning?
