I just bought a truck... it does not run yet

Like I didn't have enough things to do in my "spare time" (somebody is going to have to teach me what that means)
it's of course a diesel, but it's a 94 chevy 2500 extended cab long bed, 6.5 TD, and I have zero knowledge on the electronic IP, aside from the acronym "PMD" and "relocating it"
the truck comes with a TON of parts... even a newly rebuilt IP in a bag on the seat... fun.

I've posted questions and help in a GM forum, so don't worry about me getting it running, but if you have pointers on fixing the thing, fire away!
I get fuel into the filter, out of the filter into the IP, and out the drain, and when cranking SLOWLY on dead batteries, I get fuel at the injectors. so it's not likely a delivery issue, but it could be timing, compression,or air... the turbo was seized from sitting so long, but I freed that up. we'll see what it does today with fresh new batteries in there.

it comes with an L tank in the bed to hold 150 gallons of "fuel" and an air powered fuel transfer pump that is not connected... the pump is odd, it's got an air fitting, and aeroquip fittings for output... the pump is rated up to 150psi of air, and "750 PSI Oil"... WTF?

I'll get pics up of the pump and other things as I get them unloaded etc...
wish me luck!

Not a bad looking truck. That would be a good candidate for a repower with a 4-53T.

Once you get it running, you could do a bed liner paint job and it will be indestructible.

Nice truck. What's the tow rating on a truck like that?

We had a gas '98 4WD as a farm truck...it will tow as much as you can hitch to it. Granted, it's not going fast but we were able to pull stuck tractors out with it.

Vstech,

I was looking at a 3/4 ton Suburban with that motor. There is a site specific to the "upgrades" for that diesel (not just a Chevy forum.....

I think this is it: 6.5L Diesel Engine - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums

Good luck....she looks like a beauty!!

IIRC, the very first 6.5 TD's used a mechanical pump. The electronically controlled pump was introduced for the reduced PM standards effective on Jan. 1, 1994.

Good luck with that. Those engines are great. Hauled plenty of pellets for pellet stoves in the 93 3500. When they run, they are extremely reliable for the most part. My neighbor enjoys it. One problem with the starter since he owned it.

6.5L Diesel Engine - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums seems to get the most 6.5 traffic.

You need to ohm the glow plugs AND the leads, the relays don't do any diagnostics. You can easily change the four on the left side, kinda the front two on the right, and we don't talk about the rear two on the right.

You do have OBD-I, "paperclip" codes access.

Be advised a 1994 uses a "special" pump. Earlier was mechanical and all later were a bit different, but both vintages used the same FSD/PMD (though now there is a "new" style gray PMD); it's my understanding from Bill Heath that you can put a later pump on a '94, but you have to change the PCM (powertrain control module, GM term for ECU) to one that matches. You can google your mounted and/or spare pump numbers to see the what-whats.

With the 6-lug running gear, your GVWR is PROBABLY 7200 or so.

There is no real reason to swap to a mechanical injector pump. Your PMD needs to be remote between the bumper nostrils. On the manifold or turbo or firewall OR ANYWHERE ELSE UNDER THE HOOD is NOT REMOTE.

I prefer my trucks to have a built-in shell.

Thumbs up

Looks like a good new toy John.
Electronic IP's are fine when they are working properly. My jeep has one.
If you are planning on seeing how they work, you are lucky to have the spare. The one on my jeep (bosch) has a body that can be moved back & forth when the bolts are loosened, thats the fuel quantity adjustment. If you were to remove the body to replace seals without first marking the position, you mess it up & require a bosch guy to reset it ($$$). Dont know if yours is similar. Biggest pain is not being able to rev it up from under the hood.
