How should I extract them? I unfortunately worked on my car into darkness that was just too dark and one of the belts jammed between the fan and crankshaft pulleys. How do I extract it without turning the engine backwards?

I appreciate any help you can give...

You could remove the fan, clutch and pulley from the water pump.

Looking @ the lower (in the picture, the other belt) your belts need to be replaced. The other belt looks as if it's missing segments. So if you need new belts, a pair of diagonals or knife is the removal tool.

I realize that you were on a budget from your original posts, so sometimes wedging them 90 degrees (into the "tight spot") and then pulling on the belt, will cause the water pump pulley to rotate enough the pull it free.

Just my .02

If you willing to get new belts, I'd just cut them and rotate the engine in the proper direction until they're free. If not ready for new belts I'd just the pulleys off. You don't to be pulling and twisting in odd directions you could damage the belt and then have it fail on the road. Do you know how old the belts are, it might be time for new ones anyway.

... how long has it been since the car was running? that is a lot of rust on the pulleys... I would not cut the belts until they have been running on the car for a bit, to remove some of the rust.
do you have a replacement pulley for the alt?

I believe the car was last run about two years ago, maybe more. About two years ago, the PO had several parts stolen from him (exhaust from the header down, radiator, ignition tumbler, glow plug, etc), and since this was his "standby" 300D, he didn't bother replacing them. His daily driver was a 1983 300D that I almost bought, but was just too much for my budget.

Could I just use a wire brush and cleaner on the pulleys? The belts in the car are halfway "glued" into the grooves, and in many cases coming out missing occasional "teeth".

Yes, I have a pulley for the alternator, as well as a replacement alternator -- this one is seized. Nothing I have will move it.
