Re-Booting Annular Axles:

Ok, most likely will be using a good used set of Annular (Lobro style) axles on my 300SD 2.47:1 diff swap. Any suggestions on a vendor for GOOD boots???

I think I saw the pneumatic 'claw' tool in our supply cabinet, so I think I can pull this off, just need some GOOD boots.

I have a full set of W116 Boots and grease in my personal stock, might be able to work out a trade if someone is interested????

Thanks.....Robert

I have used Astoria 3000 with total sucess. I have used Dorman with the spreader and broken more than I was sucessful with. My advise is Astoria only. Good luck.

Astoria???

Where to get them????

vstech 11-15-2012 12:42 PM

I just give them a call, and he ships them to me.
Astoria 2000 LLC. FLEXX BOOT

oh, and now that I think on it, I use the 3001 boots. the 3000 is a little thin for me.

I've only ever seen the homokinetic type - for those you most certainly do need a boot gun if you're not going to cut off the old cans and try and fit new ones...

...can't you just disassemble the annular type to reach the boots?

If not what's the point of all them there bolts?!

(EDIT and don't say to hold 'em together!)

I've never taken any of the axles to bits to change the boots... I just clean them up, cut off the old boots, and fill with oil, and pop on the new boots. the air tool is SOOOOOO FAST!!!

I spray 3m rubberized coating on my old boots (still on car) before they tear. I clean and degrease them carefully and then do a 1/4 section at a time allowing for 2 hour dry time - stuff works great!

Yes, from what I have read on the W123s Annular Axles the end that goes into the Differential comes apart and there is a Clip that holds the Axle Shaft in the Joint Flange.
Remove the Clip and get the Shaft out and you can slide the Boots on.

Not sure what is in this thread -Rebuild of Annular Axles talked about.

First, I wish I had that tool!!!!!
Second, would the 3001 boots fit my 1995 E300D and do the boots come with new clamps
Third, do the clamps take a special tool?
Thx

I bought a boot gun for just under a hundred euros over here - I'd expect them to be cheaper in the US of A (most things are). The only problem you then might have is a source of compressed air - a foot pump or a bicycle pump won't cut it!

So if you took your time you reckon you could put on proper boots instead of those crappy flexx things?

If so that's the way I'd go. After playing about with a boot gun and flexx boots I quickly formed the opinion that they are fruit of the devil.

Yeah, after destroying 30 odd Flexx #3000 boots, I wised up, and got the 3001's... I have had ZERO issues with those boots. larger body, larger small end, and thicker rubber. perfect fit on all fronts.
