Re-Booting Annular Axles:
Ok, most likely will be using a good used set of Annular (Lobro style) axles on my 300SD 2.47:1 diff swap. Any suggestions on a vendor for GOOD boots???
I think I saw the pneumatic 'claw' tool in our supply cabinet, so I think I can pull this off, just need some GOOD boots. I have a full set of W116 Boots and grease in my personal stock, might be able to work out a trade if someone is interested???? Thanks.....Robert |
I use astoria 3000

I've only ever seen the homokinetic type - for those you most certainly do need a boot gun if you're not going to cut off the old cans and try and fit new ones...
...can't you just disassemble the annular type to reach the boots? http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...1233500410-M84 If not what's the point of all them there bolts?! (EDIT and don't say to hold 'em together!) |
I've never taken any of the axles to bits to change the boots... I just clean them up, cut off the old boots, and fill with oil, and pop on the new boots. the air tool is SOOOOOO FAST!!!

I spray 3m rubberized coating on my old boots (still on car) before they tear. I clean and degrease them carefully and then do a 1/4 section at a time allowing for 2 hour dry time - stuff works great!

Remove the Clip and get the Shaft out and you can slide the Boots on. Not sure what is in this thread -Rebuild of Annular Axles talked about. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/277503-w123-annular-style-axle-rebuild.html |

If so that's the way I'd go. After playing about with a boot gun and flexx boots I quickly formed the opinion that they are fruit of the devil. |
