1,000 Miles a Week on a 617.950:

Here are a list of my 'issuses' that I am currently facing on my 1978 300SD with 68,000 since the complete rebuild:

1. Weep from upper/lower half of ACC servo

2. Weeping auxillary water pump

3. Weep from oil filter housing to block gasket

4. Turbo drain tube grommet cracked and weeping

5. Turbo adapter to intake manifold 'O' rings need replacing

6. 4 year old Continental belts cracked and need replacing

7. Oil change due (now at 6,000 miles since last change)

8. Upper half of steering gear to lower half weeps

9. Clattery injektor on cylinder #1 only at idle (Have spare set on hand and plan on sending set to Greazzer for resetting and balancing)

10. Rack damper all the way in to smooth idle - need to replace IP (1,000,000+ miles on the IP)

I have all the parts on hand, just having a tough time getting the car off the road to service it. I am working on it on my (2) 15 minute breaks and my lunch hour and that just isn't enough time.

All in all, these are not too bad considering the amount of miles I am racking up!!!!!

Just a few things to correct. I picked up all the gaskets/o-rings/seals from MBZ of Palm Springs, so it's just a matter of finding the time to change them out...

I don't burn any oil in a 6,000 mile service interval, so I don't think Motor Honey would help!!!!!

Changed oil at 7,000 miles and no noticeable drop on the stick...

Gotta admit,

The old W116 looks pretty good for original paint (except hood and LF fender) and the tint and wheel refinish took years off the old bird....

My 4 year old loves this car...

1-On your own
2-Replace it with a $2 90* elbow, so you can disassemble and clean the pump on your time. Don't forget to add a fuse inline with the aux pump
3-Start spraying the oil cooler connections now to let the PB Blaster creep in
4-Use a 1" pvc pipe to hammer the new one in. I did it on mine with everything in the car at around 15*F
5-smooth that adapter with a dremel while it's out
6-Belts will be belts
7-Yup
8-Good luck
9-He's the man to recondition them all right
10-Have you tried a new damper? Valves are in check?

Glad to hear it's well maintained

1. I was able to snug up the screws on the lower half of the ACC Servo

2. Got new Aux Pump (my 1978 has an inline fuse for the pump)

3-4. Easy fix based on a post by a creative forum member - No tools required

5. Mine is ported & polished along with the intake manifold

6. All (4) Conti belts from the dealer $34.00

7. Done - Used Valvoline 15w40 Diesel Oil

8. If you take the coupler off, remove two bolts and rotate the gear upward, you can raise the upper half enough to swap out the O-ring in the car

9. Yep, Greazzer is the man.

10. Yes, valves are in spec, IP is just worn out after 1,000,000 miles...

35 mpg

Excellent mileage. What speeds do you run at? How much is your maximum and average boost?
Thanks

Best mileage comes in at 2400-2600 rpm (about 60-65 mph with current tires and gearing) and 10psi of boost. When the 2.47:1 axle goes in, I will be able to run 80 mph at the same cruise rpm...

Mileage as of 03/11/2013 – 1,327,440

Currently 83,000 miles on engine/transmission

Engine burned 1 quart of oil every 3,000 miles until it reached 67,000 miles at which time oil consumption totally stopped.

Still haven’t had time to install the 2.47:1 axle just yet.

Still driving 1,100 miles a week…

The old W116 just rolled up 1,330,000 a couple of weeks ago....

That's 12,115 miles driven between 12/27/2012 and 03/27/2013 or about 4,038 miles per month

You must have a really healthy torque converter or something, my w123 is only going about 40mph in that rpm range

On my car, (W116) I am currently running the stock 3.07:1 axle and a 215/70R14 tire. That works out to 2450 rpm @ 60 mph, verified by a substitute tachometer and corrected for tire size error.

(MPH X Axle Ratio / Tire Diameter X 336 = RPM)
