Engine Out Pictures
1 Attachment(s)
Here are some pics of the engine, and the car - notice how much the front came up without the engine/tranny. All I have to do now is wait for my new engine to come....
|
As you can see from the pictures, this engine isnt too happy right now. I took the bottom end apart and its nicely sized up, so I decided to go the route of a rebuilt engine wich will save me lotsa hasle. The car dosn't look to pretty either right now but while I wait for the funds to collect for the engine im going to start body work (remove all rust - replace all chrome - repaint) and hopfully things will get better! guess I have a new project car now! hmmm now I have to go buy a throw - away car to drive until I can get this one back into shape...( looking at a $150 4X4 toyota wagon - it'll work for a couple weeks i hope!!!!)

I am assuming you are using a digital camera so what I am suggesting would be free except labor... This seems like a great time to get pictures of that engine/trans,inside of engine compartment, for later use on the FAQ page... could you do that?
If you can/would then you could go to the FREE site Photoisland.com and store them there for future reference...... If everyone will start doing this type of anticipatory reference work it will really help out the over all quality of the FAQ pages... Thanks, Greg |
Hey that sounds good - I can take like a photo - book of installation and assy. pictures and post them here like a photo book. I'll see what I can do ok? As soon as I get the new engine ill just take a bunch of instructional pictures and show how to remove and install many of the components.

also for the 123 fans out there I will be rebuilding the front end of a 85 300 D soon and I will try to get pictures of that process as well.

WOW! It looks like that cam broke right through a lobe. Not exactly the place I would expect to see a cam break, normally that happenes where the material isn't so thick.
|
That would be great ! Thanks, Greg
|
Yeah I would of never guessed that the cam would break there either - I thought it would be more in the middle somwhere! I just cant believe all that happened just because of that (broken chain, and it mangled the bottom end as well - it dosn't want to turn anymore (even with the head off)
|
Wow, that cam is toast! Why did that happen? Was it just because of the age and mileage, or were you winding the sh** out of it...or both? Just curious because my 82 300D has the same engine (I think).
|
I have no idea at all why the cam was broken or the engine sized. I wasnt driving it hard or anything. The person that owned it before me had let it overheat on several occasions tho which could fatiuge the metal, and they often tried to take this car in places where it shouldnt be and ripped the oil pan off once - and they patched it with JB weld and put it back on kinda in a jurry rig way so any of these factors could be a good reason for a engine failure. (this car was 800 bucks, so I accepted a few flaws - never again!)I think you have the a slightly different 5 CYL engine in your car, and as long as you take care of it, it'll last forever!
